Congrats to Dr. Andrew Reisner and his colleagues at Children's and Emory on this exciting discovery! We love seeing this kind of collaboration from our investigators!

Exciting news: A recent pilot study, led by our very own Dr. Andrew Reisner, showed evidence for a blood indicator in kids who may have worse COVID-19 and MIS-C symptoms than others. In collaboration with infectious disease experts at Children’s, our pediatric neurotrauma team discovered elevated levels of plasma osteopontin, an inflammatory biomarker they used to follow traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and concussions, were also elevated in COVID-19 positive and MIS-C patients. The findings were just published in Experimental Biology and Medicine, and the research team, including Drs. Laura Blackwell, Evan Anderson, Andi Shane and Christina Rostad, are hopeful results will be confirmed in a full clinical trial, allowing clinicians to measure osteopontin to direct the course of treatment, and likely better outcomes, for those diseases. https://www.choa.org/biomarkerstudy

Emory Department of Pediatrics leads nation in NIH research funding

Emory's Department of Pediatrics is now ranked #1 in the country for NIH research funding. Such funding is critical in helping our researchers impact the lives of many children across so many disciplines.

The Department of Pediatrics in Emory's School of Medicine led the nation in federal research funding from the National Institutes of Health in 2020 among pediatric departments, according to rankings from the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research.

NIH supports study of arginine therapy for sickle cell pain:

Claudia R. Morris, professor of pediatrics at Emory School of Medicine and pediatric emergency medicine physician at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, received $8.7 million from the NIH to determine if giving additional arginine can reduce pain during a sickle cell pain crisis. Morris will lead a multicenter study of intravenous arginine therapy in collaboration with the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s. Too little arginine, a type of amino acid that helps regulate normal blood flow, may cause blood vessels to constrict, reducing blood flow and contributing to sickle-related pain.

11/12/2020

James Klosky, professor of pediatrics at Emory School of Medicine and director of psychology for the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and University of Alabama colleague Wendy Landier were awarded a $1.8 million U01 grant from the National Cancer Institute. The study will evaluate the effectiveness and implementation of an intervention to increase HPV vaccine uptake among young cancer survivors.

Emory University will enroll adult volunteers in a large-scale clinical trial designed to evaluate whether a single dose of an investigational vaccine can prevent symptomatic COVID-19.
.
The vaccine candidate, developed by the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson, moved to Phase 3 trials after encouraging results from an earlier clinical study.
.
This is the first late stage trial to assess if a single dose vaccine can protect people against COVID-19.

Immune cell activation in severe COVID-19 resembles lupus

In severe cases of COVID-19, Emory researchers have been observing an exuberant activation of immune cells, resembling acute flares of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease.

Their findings point towards tests that could separate some COVID-19 patients who need immune-calming therapies from others who may not. They also may begin to explain why some people infected with SARS-CoV-2 produce abundant antibodies against the virus, yet experience poor outcomes.

In severe cases of COVID-19, an exuberant activation of antibody-producing cells resembles that seen in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Congratulations to Krittin "Jay" Supapannachart of the Maxwell laboratory who recently received a scholarship from the American Heart Association to study the role of EMT in pediatric cardiac repair. Cells that are fully differentiated can be reverted back to an earlier phenotype to help promote repair in juvenile heart failure. Way to go!

Children's Heart Research and Outcomes Center

For any families interested in our research updates for our Children's Heart Research and Outcomes Center - please let us know what time of day suits your needs best! We'd love for this to be a very interactive session!

HeRO community, we hope you are staying well during these complicated times and getting the support you need. Since our labs are mostly closed, we thought this would be a great time to share our research updates with the clinicians, parents, and anyone who was interested in learning. We are going to have a 60-90 Zoom event where you can hear small updates from each of our researchers themselves and ask questions. Please comment below regarding your preference for timing of this event; morning, afternoon, evening. We will record this and post it in the future, but this is a great chance for interactions and to see where we are going with our research.
