Asperger’s, Autism, and Mass Murder

Here is an excellent article shared with us by a friend. Of note is this: "As the definition of autism and Asperger’s says: This is a communication disorder. It’s not a “lack of feeling” disorder. In fact, most clinicians who work with people on the autism spectrum will tell you autistic people tend to care deeply for people in their lives, and have a sweetness; a childlike gentleness . . ."

I Stand WITH Henry

Thank you to a friend of The New Normal Society who recommended Henry's page. The exclusion of children with a variety of disabilities from their neighborhood schools, as well as the rampant segregation of students with disabilities when they do attend neighborhood schools, are two of the most profound civil rights issues of our time. We stand with Henry.

Ending Segregation of the Mentally Disabled

This is a positive step in the right direction. Going forward, these adults need and deserve the acceptance and support of their communities. Hopefully the next generation of individuals with different needs will experience meaningful inclusion and the genuine friendships that we all need to thrive. Let's make that happen!

Hundreds of severely disabled citizens in Georgia are being reintegrated into society amid pressure from the Justice Department to end discrimination against the cognitively and physically impaired.

Making Relationships a Priority

Here are some terrific suggestions for inclusion. Wishing you all a safe and happy Labor Day weekend!

One of the biggest myths I hear in my work in inclusive education is about friendship. Teachers commonly share that they struggle to facilitate relationships during the middle and high school years because older students simply are not interested in socializing with students with disabilities. As

Stephen Wiltshire is an artist who draws and paints detailed cityscapes. He has a particular talent for drawing lifelike, accurate representations of cities, sometimes after having only observed them briefly.

This is a wonderful visual, not just for kids on the autism spectrum but for all children!

Behavior Tip: Some children are truly not aware of the tone they are using or the volume they are speaking at. This is a great visual I am using with my own son to work on his skills! It prints out well in 4x6 if you download the picture.

How Autism is Changing the World for Everybody...interesting easy read! http://jezebel.com/5929312/how-autism-is-changing-the-world-for-everybody

There's not much doubt that autism, along with Asperger Syndrome, is finally becoming accepted as a normal part of the human fabric. Even if some people still see autism as a condition that needs to be "treated," it's increasingly obvious that people on the autism spectrum are finding ways to...

Happy Friday, everyone, and welcome our newest puppet, Ben! Ben was donated by his mum and dad, and he is super excited to help us teach kids how to be a good friend to someone with autism :) And, just like his namesake, if you're a good friend, Ben will let you touch his awesome hairdo!

We only have a few puppets left that are in need of a namesake, so please visit us at www.newnormalsociety.org/donations if you'd like to donate a puppet that will help us promote friendship and inclusion for individuals on the autism spectrum. Thank you!

Upon hearing about our programs promoting friendship and inclusion, a doctor at Georgia Tech supporting college students on the autism spectrum said this: "One of the things that is clear is that the long term consequences of repeated social rejection and isolation are often more debilitating than the features associated with their spectrum diagnosis." Isn't it time for a NEW NORMAL in our understanding of people with autism?

General information

We believe the demystification of autism, through age appropriate programs and models, allows typical peers to form meaningful friendships with people on the autism spectrum. Our goal is to bring these programs to public and private schools throughout the state of Georgia. We believe in a 'New Normal' for the way our society views, educates and treats people with autism. We believe that with all challenges come gifts and we strive to help people with autism build on those strengths and parlay them into a productive and more independent future.
