Did you know that every 15 minutes, a man dies from prostate cancer? September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a time to learn about this disease which affects 1 in 8 men throughout their lifetime.

Thankfully, in most cases, prostate cancer is a slow-growing disease and upon diagnosis, there is time to gather information, consider your options, and make a plan. The five-year survival rate from 2009 to 2015 was 99%, meaning a man diagnosed with prostate cancer in that time period had a 99% chance of being alive five years later. For more information, visit www.zerocancer.org.

KDHRC emphasizes our commitment to raising awareness for the disease through our program Familias Fuertes, aiding Latino populations in coping with cancer. More than 2% of cancer cases among the Latino population occur in children and adolescents, compared with 1% of cancer cases in the total U.S. population.

Summer may be winding down for some of us, but UV rays are a constant all year long! While these ultraviolet rays may be the strongest in the spring and summer months, they can still cause serious damage well into September.

In addition to skin cancer, exposure to UV rays can cause sunburn, eye problems, premature aging of the skin, and more. The American Cancer Society recommends applying sunscreen, but more importantly, staying in the shade as much as one can. For more info, visit cancer.org.

Did you know that Non-Hispanic children aged 0-17 years whose primary language at home was not English had the lowest percentage of vision testing as compared to children in homes where English or Spanish were spoken?

August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, focused on offering all children comprehensive eye exams regardless of race, s*x, language, or economic status. A good rule of thumb is to have your children’s eyes examined during yearly visits, beginning around age three. Your child’s eye doctor can help detect refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
