The U.S. Surgeon General recently released a landmark report, “Facing Addiction in America: The Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health.” This comprehensive document marks the first time that a surgeon general has focused on substance (alcohol or drugs) misuse and related disorders.

Here are some interesting highlights:
- Most Americans know someone with a substance use disorder, and many know someone who has lost or nearly lost a family member from substance misuse.

- About 40% of individuals who know they have an alcohol or drug problem are not ready to stop—which may partly be a consequence of the neurobiological changes that affect their judgment, motivation.

- About 10% of people with a substance use disorder receive any type of specialty treatment.

- Over 40% of people with a substance use disorder also have a mental health condition, yet fewer than 50% receive treatment for either disorder.

- Over 66 million people (nearly 25% of the adult and adolescent population) report binge drinking in the past month.

- Over 27 million people in the U.S. report current use of illicit drugs or misuse of prescription drugs.

- It is estimated that the yearly economic impact of substance misuse is $249 billion for alcohol misuse and $193 billion for illicit drug use.
