Novel Therapy for Equine Osteoarthritis: pPRP-Lysate – The Horse

“Together, these results show that pPRP-L can restore normal HA synthesis and cartilage extracellular matrix production in the face of inflammation,” Schnabel said. “This offers a unique anti-inflammatory approach to joint preservation.”

Researchers tested pooled platelet-rich plasma lysate as a unique anti-inflammatory approach to joint preservation on lab samples.

Equine mesenchymal stromal cells may prove helpful in healing wounds, findings suggest - Horsetalk.co.nz

Researchers from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, noted that mesenchymal stromal cells from various species, including humans, mice, and horses, were recently found to effectively inhibit the growth of various bacteria associated with chronic infections, such as non-healing skin wounds, via secretion of antimicrobial peptides.

Proteins released by these cells even managed to destabilize biofilms produced by methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Equine Stem Cells Cryopreserved for Cartilage Repair

If cryopreserved, stored cells can be used and treatment would be very efficient, with no need to harvest stem cells from the patient. This means fewer visits, less waiting and faster treatment.

Researchers at U of Guelph’s OVC are working to preserve cartilage chips for long-term storage, eliminating the need to harvest stem cells from the patient.

Can cryopreservation of equine stem cells work for cartilage repair? - Horsetalk.co.nz

Cryopreservation is the next exciting stage of research in stem cell therapy. Dr Thomas Koch and his team are working to preserve cartilage chips for long-term storage, which would enable off-the-shelf use to treat localized cartilage defects. Such defects very often shorten or end horses athletic careers.

Regenerative medicine research helps heal horses and dogs

“Small animal vets are becoming more aware and interested in the regenerative medicine,” Dahlgren said. “It is also appealing to owners, and it’s enjoyable to know that we can apply this to other species.

Virginia Tech researchers have been looking into a medicine that could completely regenerate tissue cells, creating stronger ligaments that are less prone to future injuries.

Stem cell researchers to tackle bowed tendons in horses - Horsetalk.co.nz

In a pilot study with three horses, it was found that repeated injections of the allogeneic stem cells were very effective and that two of the horses were able to successfully return to racing and the third was able to start a career as a competitive sport horse.

Microencapsulated equine mesenchymal stromal cells promote cutaneous wound healing in vitro. - PubMed - NCBI

Our salient findings were that equine MSC-derived CM stimulated the migration of equine dermal fibroblasts and increased their expression level of genes that positively contribute to wound healing. In addition, we found that equine MSCs packaged in core-shell hydrogel microcapsules had similar effects on equine dermal fibroblast migration and gene expression, indicating that microencapsulation of MSCs does not interfere with the release of bioactive factors.

NC State professor researches regenerative therapies for horses

“One of the long-term-goals of our lab is to develop ways to use MSCs in an off-the-shelf manner,” Berglund said. “This means that a horse could receive MSCs from a donor at the time of injury or diagnosis of disease instead of waiting weeks until their own cells can be cultured and expanded for use.”

Humans can have a lot in common with their animal companions, and in the case of horses, even similar injuries and rehabilitation.
