National Hereditary Breast & Ovarian Cancer Week is all about educating people on potential risk factors and prevention strategies for women who discover that they're at increased genetic risk for the disease.

Each year 250,000 women in the US learn they have breast cancer and more than 20,000 learn they have ovarian cancer. Not all of these cancers happen by chance. Some are hereditary.

Inherited cancer genes like BRCA1 and BRCA2, can raise the risk for both breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

How do you know if you're at risk?

1. Share your family health history with your physician.
2. Get screened for genetic changes.
3. Consult with a genetic counselor.
