Today's tip focuses on steam safety.

When water reaches the boiling point of 212 degrees, it turns to steam, resulting in super-heated molecules of v***r that can cause instantaneous scalding with body skin. Steam is more likely to cause burns and injuries than boiling water due to the latent heat v***rization.

Be very cautious when running steam around small children. Children are more likely to experience burns to their hands or faces in the steam escaping from appliances.

Symptoms of steam burns include redness, swelling, pain, blisters, shedding of skin and leaking fluid from inured or burned areas. If you experience a steam burn, always call your primary care doctor right away, or contact our services at 855-863-9595.

The Firth Annual Augusta Polo Cup returns November 6, 2021, at historic Daniel Field in Augusta, GA.
Daniel Field began in 1924 when the City of Augusta leased 302 acres for an airport and a municipal golf course.

Did you know that Daniel Field was leased as a polo field from 1930 to 1937? To this day, construction crews still find remnants from the polo days, including horseshoes.

Today's tip focuses on piercings safety.

Body piercings are trendy today, but safety should always be taken when it comes to piercings. Piercings create an open part of the body for inserting jewelry. Any piercing can cause complications such as allergic reactions, skin infections, blood infections, skin tearing or trauma and other skin-related problems.

Please do not attempt to piece yourself or have an untrained friend do it for you. Always have a trained professional do the piercing. Also, regulation requirements and licensing standards vary by state. Ensure that proper equipment is used to avoid damaging the skin and ensure the correct type of metal is used to avoid metal poisoning.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact us at 855-863-9595.

Today's tip focuses on heavy machinery safety.

Heavy machinery is a broad category of heavy-duty vehicles and large machines used for industrial workplaces—cranes, forklifts, trucks, bulldozers, excavators, dump trucks, etc. Heavy machinery is involved in 75% of fatal accidents on construction sites every year. Most accidents are accidental but are also very preventable.

Heavy machinery operators must always exercise the most caution and safety. Proper safety equipment such as gloves, safety goggle and construction hardhats must always be worn. In addition, operators should be trained on the proper procedures in safely maneuvering the heavy equipment.

Today's tip focuses on dry ice and freezer burn safety.

Dry ice is solidified carbon dioxide and is much colder than regular ice. Dry ice can burn the skin to cause pain, blisters, numbness and tingling, and can also cause symptoms similar to frostbite. When dry ice melts, it turns into carbon dioxide gas. If not insulated properly, symptoms can include dizziness, headache, nausea, difficulty breathing and unconsciousness.

When handling dry ice, you should always wear insulated gloves and face and eye protection. Dry ice should be kept out of reach of children and should also never be eaten or swallowed. Dry ice should always be kept in a well-ventilated area. It is also safe to have a carbon dioxide detector present.

Today's tip focuses on space heater safety.

Space heaters are self-contained appliances used for heating small spaces, usually in enclosed spaces. Space heaters have a temperature range from about 40 to 90 degrees. Unfortunately, space heaters also cause 43% of home heating fires every year and seconds leading cause of fire-related deaths.

If you are using a fuel-based heater, keep the heater in a well-ventilated area because dangerous levels of carbon monoxide can build up. While electric heaters might be a safer choice for indoors, as they don't emit carbon monoxide or other pollutants, they can still pose a fire risk if you operate them near flammable materials.

Our Story

The philosophy of Burn and Reconstructive Centers of America is simple: We provide treatment to patients no matter their gender, age, mechanism of injury or ability to pay.

This goal has been the cornerstone of our burn centers since the first patient was treated at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Georgia, in 1978. That single patient set the process in motion to establish what would become the nation’s largest burn center. Along with that growth came the need to bring our care closer to our patients via satellite clinics across the Southeast.

From the outset, our physicians banded together to create Physicians’ Multispecialty Group to provide patient care. PMG evolved into Joseph M. Still Burn Centers, Inc., the forerunner of BRCA.

BRCA continues to grow and partner with hospitals across the country to provide patient access to a continuum of care that supports the patient from initial injury through long-term rehabilitation, while ensuring no patient is turned away. We provide quality burn, hand, wound and reconstructive care to patients through new facilities, new partnerships and the latest advancements in care. BRCA is the nation’s largest burn network with almost 340 beds and 15 facilities spread over eight states including Idaho, Colorado, Texas, Nevada, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi and Florida. The cornerstone of the network, JMS Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Georgia, sits as the largest individual center in America with 92 total beds, including 36 in the Intensive Care Unit.
