WHAT DOES IT ACTUALLY DO? — Geogard® 221

You see preservatives listed in formulations all the time, but what are they actually doing in there?
Think of Geogard® 221 as part of your product’s defense system.

It’s a broad-spectrum preservative made with Benzyl Alcohol + Dehydroacetic Acid that helps protect water-based and emulsified formulations against:
- Bacteria
- Yeast
- Mold
That makes it useful in products like lotions, creams, serums, shampoos, conditioners, body washes, liquid soaps, and emulsified scrubs.
But here's the important part: preservatives aren't one-size-fits-all.
Geogard® 221 performs best when the finished formulation has a pH below 6, with a recommended usage rate of 0.2–1.0%. Your finished product still needs proper formulation, pH testing, and—especially when you're selling commercially—microbial challenge testing.
So, in plain English?

Water in your formula can create an environment for microbial growth. Geogard® 221 helps protect the finished product from that contamination.
