Things no one told me about before I became a parent: how much time I’d spend discussing my baby’s diapers! One of the easiest ways to learn about how feeding is going in those early days is by keeping track of wet and dirty diapers 🤍
Here’s a general guide to what you might expect during your baby’s first week:
🍼 Day 1: At least 1 wet diaper and 1 meconium poop
🍼 Day 2: At least 2 wet diapers and 2 poops
🍼 Day 3: At least 3 wet diapers and 3 poops that begin to transition in color
🍼 Day 4: At least 4 wet diapers and 4 poops that continue to transition in color
🍼 Day 5 and beyond: Typically 6+ wet diapers per day, with stools transitioning to yellow for many breastfed babies
✨ Why does this matter? Diaper output helps us understand whether baby may be getting enough milk, especially when considered alongside weight gain, feeding patterns, and how baby is doing overall.
Keep in mind that diaper counts are just one piece of the puzzle. If your baby has fewer wet diapers than expected, is difficult to wake for feeds, or you’re concerned about feeding, reach out to your pediatrician or an IBCLC promptly.
🤰 Expecting a little one? You don’t have to wait until baby arrives to learn the basics!
