Three first responders in their late 20s and early 30s came to me for nutrition coaching within just a few weeks.
All three were struggling with VERY similar things 😩
▪ Exhaustion, even after days off
▪ Strong sugar cravings
▪ Trouble controlling portions
▪ Little energy to exercise
They blamed shift work, young kids, and busy schedules...and honestly, those are reasonable explanations. But as I dug into their sleep habits, their symptoms made more sense.
They were getting fewer than 5 hours of sleep, tossing and turning, and waking up exhausted 💤
I recommended a sleep study for all three. All THREE were diagnosed with significant sleep apnea 😳
After starting CPAP, one firefighter reported more energy, fewer sugar cravings, and more activity with his kids.
He also reported a roughly 2% drop in body fat that first month. We can't attribute that change to CPAP alone, but his improvements in energy and appetite were meaningful.
I share this because I see first responders blame themselves ALL the time for struggling with nutrition, weight, and motivation.
Yes, sometimes food habits need work. But if we ignore sleep, stress, and shift work, we're missing important pieces of the puzzle 🧩
It's why I believe nutrition deserves a bigger role in department wellness programs.
Your crews may have fitness equipment, annual physicals, and health screenings. But are they learning how to fuel long shifts, manage cravings, and recover between calls?
These are conversations I have with first responders every day, and exactly what I bring to departments through All Shift Nutrition Training.
▪ Live virtual training for every shift
▪ Practical, evidence-based nutrition strategies
▪ Recordings crews can revisit without taking personnel out of service
Fire chiefs and wellness leaders: I'd love to help strengthen your department's wellness program.
