This week’s Brain-Healthy Salad Jar has a plant count of 10!

The Avocado Chicken Salad Jar layers black beans, corn, red onion, tomatoes, chicken, avocado, mixed greens, cilantro, and microgreens with a bright lime dressing.

It offers a helpful combination of protein, fiber-rich plants, colorful produce, and unsaturated fat from avocado and olive oil. It’s also easy to adapt—salmon, tofu, or additional beans can replace the chicken.

The recipe makes four jars for simple grab-and-go lunches.

Have you ever had your Lipoprotein(a) checked?

Lipoprotein(a), often written as Lp(a), is a cardiovascular-risk marker that is largely determined by genetics. It can be elevated even when someone eats well, exercises regularly and has an LDL cholesterol result that does not appear especially concerning.

Because Lp(a) is inherited and usually remains relatively stable, it does not need to be checked as frequently as routine cholesterol. But you cannot estimate it from lifestyle, appearance or a standard lipid panel—the only way to know is to measure it.

The Advanced Cardiovascular Risk Screening at EMC Wellness includes:

• Lipoprotein(a)
• ApoB and ApoA-1
• Standard lipid panel
• A1C and comprehensive metabolic panel
• Blood pressure and other biometric measurements
• PREVENT™ calculation when eligible
• Personalized written interpretation

Advanced Cardiovascular Risk Screening: $219

Testing is intended for health education and risk awareness. Results do not establish a diagnosis and should be considered alongside your health history and appropriate medical care.

This week’s Brain-Healthy Salad Jar: Thai Chicken with Peanut Dressing 🥜

This colorful jar combines chicken, edamame, carrots, red pepper, purple cabbage, cilantro, and buckwheat soba noodles with a simple peanut-lime dressing.

Why I like it:

• Chicken and edamame provide protein
• Purple cabbage and red pepper add colorful plant compounds
• Peanuts provide unsaturated fat
• Seven different plant foods add variety to the week

Each recipe makes four jars, so one round of preparation can cover several lunches.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing recipes from my new Brain-Healthy Salad Jar collection.

Each recipe makes four jars, making it easier to prepare several nourishing lunches at once. The collection includes colorful vegetables, beans, whole grains, healthy fats, and a variety of protein options—including chicken, seafood, eggs, tofu, and fully plant-based choices.

This is not about finding one “perfect” brain food. It’s about regularly including a wider variety of foods that support overall cardiovascular, metabolic, and brain health.

Is your LDL cholesterol telling you the whole story?

A standard cholesterol panel is an important starting point, but LDL cholesterol does not always reflect the complete number or type of cholesterol-carrying particles in the bloodstream.

The Advanced Cardiovascular Risk Screening includes:

• Standard lipid panel
• ApoB
• ApoA-1
• Lipoprotein(a)
• Hemoglobin A1C
• Comprehensive metabolic panel
• Biometric measurements
• PREVENT™ risk calculation when eligible
• Personalized written interpretation

ApoB can provide additional information about atherogenic particle burden. ApoA-1 is the principal protein associated with HDL particles. Lipoprotein(a) can identify an inherited source of cardiovascular risk that may not be apparent on a standard lipid panel.

Advanced Cardiovascular Risk Screening: $219

This October’s screening campaign has taken on a more personal meaning for me.

A close family member recently passed away after living with Alzheimer’s disease. In his memory, I am dedicating this month’s “Know Your Numbers” cardiovascular screening campaign to him—and to the many individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

We often think of cardiovascular health in terms of heart attacks and strokes. But the heart and brain are deeply connected.

The brain depends on a healthy network of blood vessels to receive oxygen and nutrients. Conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, stroke and other vascular disease are associated not only with cardiovascular outcomes, but also with cognitive decline and a higher risk of vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

A screening cannot predict whether someone will develop Alzheimer’s, and no single laboratory result tells the whole story. But identifying and addressing modifiable cardiovascular risk factors is one meaningful way to support both heart and brain health over time.

The new Cardiometabolic Risk Screening at EMC Wellness includes:

• Standard lipid panel
• Hemoglobin A1C
• Comprehensive metabolic panel
• Blood pressure and resting heart rate
• Height, weight, BMI and waist circumference
• PREVENT™ cardiovascular-risk calculation when eligible
• A personalized written explanation of the results

An advanced option also includes ApoB, ApoA-1 and Lipoprotein(a) for a more detailed assessment of cardiovascular risk.

This month, these screenings are offered in memory of Fred and in recognition of every family navigating the effects of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Know your numbers. Protecting cardiovascular health is also an investment in lifelong brain health.

**Already know you need vitamin D?**

Many people get less vitamin D during Maine’s darker winter months. If your level has previously been low—or your healthcare practitioner has recommended vitamin D—you can view my preferred options here: https://us.fullscript.com/s/ecurrie1712227426/shop/collections/Q29sbGVjdGlvbi0zNDcwOTQ=.

I personally love the gummy option because it is so easy to take consistently!

Not sure how much you need? A vitamin D blood test can help guide a more individualized plan. Remember to include vitamin D from any multivitamins or other supplements when calculating your total daily intake.

*EMC Wellness may receive proceeds from supplements purchased through this link. You are never required to purchase through Fullscript.*
