“Your thyroid is fine.” Cool. Then why does your body feel like it’s stuck in low power mode?
🔬 Here’s the twist: your thyroid mostly makes T4, the storage form. Your body has to convert it into T3, the active form, before your cells can use it. A big chunk of that conversion happens in your liver and gut. So if your gut is inflamed or your liver is overloaded, you can make plenty of hormone and still not feel it.
⚡ Stress gets a vote too. When cortisol stays high, your body can steer T4 toward reverse T3, which acts like a brake pedal. It’s your body conserving energy because it thinks you’re in survival mode. Brilliant during a famine. Less helpful on regular days.
🥩 That conversion also needs raw materials: selenium, zinc, iron, and enough food overall. Years of dieting and under-eating can turn the dimmer down even further.
🧪 And here’s why “normal” labs can miss it: many standard workups only check TSH. TSH shows how loudly your brain is yelling at your thyroid, not how much active hormone is actually reaching your cells. It also won’t show thyroid antibodies, and Hashimoto’s is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the US.
If you’ve been told you’re fine but you don’t feel fine, you’re in the right place.
