Yesterday, we had the privilege of attending a mental health fair at BNHS and talking with students all day. We listened to students share what teens may be struggling with and what could lead them to seek therapy.
We heard so many answers, including anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, bullying, stress from school or sports, body image, family or friendship challenges, and trauma. Every student’s experience is different, but one thing is clear: teens need safe, supportive people who are willing to listen.
Check in with your kids. Ask open questions like, “What’s been weighing on you lately?” or “How can I support you right now?” Listen with curiosity, take their feelings seriously, and remind them they don’t have to handle everything alone.
Seeking mental health support is a sign of strength. Therapy can be a helpful place to talk, build skills, and feel less alone—and it’s okay to ask for help before things reach a crisis point.
