A good warm-up is a bridge between “I just walked in the door” and “I’m ready to train.”

And it doesn’t have to take forever.

The key is choosing movements that prepare you for the specific demands of the session.

Always warm-up with purpose.

My heart is broken for the families who have lost loved ones in the tragic shooting at Silver Rail Elementary. There are no words that can ease the pain of such an unimaginable loss, and our thoughts are with everyone who is grieving. I hold the students, families, teachers, and staff of Silver Rail close in my heart as they navigate fear, heartbreak, and uncertainty.

To every member of our community who has been affected by this tragedy, please know that you are not alone. We grieve with you, we stand beside you, and we will continue to hold one another up with love, compassion, and support in the days ahead.

S. is amazing! She’s just 3 races away from completing her goal of 100 half marathons! 🏃‍♀️🎉

Her next goal? Getting stronger so she can keep doing the things she loves for the long term. She’s trusted her coach with every addition to her program, including this little ditty we’re doing to improve shoulder mobility and synchronization.

Way to go, S.! Keep crushing those goals! 💪

More sets.
More workouts.
More intensity.
More sweat.

More isn’t better. In fact, more can often be detrimental.

Training creates a stimulus. Recovery allows your body to adapt to that stimulus.

This becomes especially important when life already includes work, family, stress, poor sleep, or hormonal changes.

Good training finds the right dose for your body, your goals, and your current season of life.

Train hard enough to create change.
Recover enough to actually benefit from it.

That’s smart training.

One of my favorite parts of coaching is helping people stop thinking of exercise as punishment and start thinking of it as a skill.

Strength takes practice.

And the goal isn’t simply to work harder.

It’s to train better.

That is why I don’t do 6-12 week challenges. A training program includes an assessment, progression, qualified coaching, and adjustments along the way.

Yes, age gives me useful information.

But it doesn't tell me everything I need to know. I want to know:
How strong are you right now?
How well do you recover?
What can you do comfortably?
What do you want to be able to do?
What have you done before?
What are you doing now?
What does your body tolerate?

Two people who are both 70 can have completely different training needs. That's why I don't program for an age. I program for a person.

This is an important distinction.

Menopause changes the physiological environment. It does not switch off your ability to respond to resistance training. Research consistently supports resistance training as an effective strategy for improving strength and physical function in postmenopausal women. You may need to pay more attention to training, recovery and nutrition, but adaptation is still possible. Your body can continue to respond to training.

There's a lot more happening during strength training than simply “building muscle.” Your nervous system, muscles and connective tissues all respond to mechanical loading. And that's why good programming isn't random exercise.

The dose matters. The progression matters. Recovery matters.
