Great feedback so far on these. Thank you to all who supported and let me get a little creative! So many more ideas for the future.

Little write-up that explains where my brand came from (FNXN pronounced “functions”) and the inspiration for the women’s VXN (V***n) line.

Hey all!

Just wanted to update everyone that, for the time being, I won’t be accepting any new clients.

I can’t say how much I appreciate the support and referrals! But for now I’m going to focus on my regulars and make sure they are getting the care they need.

I will post an update if/when this changes.

Ladies, check out my new VXN (V***n) crop tops!

You always come out on top. No matter what.

You navigate life’s obstacles with a sleekness that belies the courage it takes to try over and over and over.

Failures don’t slow you down. You learn, you adapt, and you get right back to hunting.

You look up through your lashes at every new challenge...and smirk.

Now taking pre-orders for FNXN t-shirts and crop tops!

Stagnation is a slow death.

This leaves us with a choice: adapt or die.

The red fox is known as one of the most adaptable species on the planet. Its ability to adjust to its surroundings allows it to survive in environments as diverse as cities, grasslands, mountains, and deserts versus its “specialist species” cousins, like the arctic fox, who would die in any other environment than its own.

Adaptability = possibilities. The failure to adapt is the failure to thrive.

FNXN was created to help you perform at your best. To work through injuries and nagging, painful soft tissue issues that keep you from living the life you want. I’m here to help you overcome.

Meet challenges head-on. Allow them to change you for the better. Build on those changes and see what you can become.

Adapt. Transform. Emerge.

And emerge a superior creature.

Had a blast teaching this Stretching for Athletes course to some of my fellow Massage Therapists! We discussed the special considerations involved in working with athletes, reviewed different stretching techniques and when they are most effective, and had tons of hands-on time learning some new ways to stretch and manipulate soft tissue.

Such a fun group! Lots of laughs and I learned some great things from them too! I really love being able to gather with a group of my colleagues and geek out about how dope the body is and how we can help it work better.

Already looking at dates for the next one!

Let’s talk about shoulders.
This joint is complex for a couple different reasons.

-It involves lots of working parts, including about 10 different muscles and 4 joints.

-Because it’s designed to have a large and versatile range of motion it is considered an unstable joint. This means that if anything is off, the surrounding musculature will make your life miserable trying to stabilize the joint. The secret to healthy shoulders is a balance between strength and range of motion, and even more specifically, strength THROUGH its ranges.

-The shoulder issues I see are just as often caused by underuse and weakness as they are by overuse and injury. MOVE THEM!! In all different directions and slowly add a load to bulletproof them.

-Overhead range of motion is one of the first things we start to lose as we age IF we don’t use it. Shoulder issues are often associated with/accompanied by neck and low back issues.

Btw this is one of my favorite soft tissue complexes to work with. if it’s bothering you hit me up. #massagetherapy #softtissuetherapy #fnxn #function #adapttransformevolve #lmt

03/28/2020

Hey all,

The statewide closure has been extended to April 8th. I will be contacting anyone with appointments before then to reschedule.

Stay healthy!

03/18/2020

Stay healthy everyone!

SITUATION UPDATE

Currently, I am planning to honor all massage appointments that have been scheduled.

I have been gathering info and speaking with other massage therapists in the area about precautions they will be taking and wanted to you to keep a few things in mind:

-I am doing extra cleaning/sanitizing
-You will be asked to wash your hands upon arrival
-If you have flu-like symptoms or have been traveling please reschedule
-If you do not feel comfortable coming in for your appointment I totally understand but if at all possible please give me at least 3 DAYS advanced notice so that I can adjust my schedule.

If anything changes, I will let you know.

Thank you!

So this was a fun one.

Amber could barely bend over at all without back pain and she had to use her arms to push herself back upright.

The issues seem to stem from a very weak core that was never rebuilt after a C-section.

We did some soft tissue work and then ended with some bracing to teach her how to activate her core to take pressure off her low back while she builds core strength in PT.

When she left, she had more range of motion and was able to brace and stand back up UNDER HER OWN POWER without pain.

The look on her face was priceless! 😁

Fat ankle part 3

Ankle update.

Lymph tape job mentioned in previous post.

02/25/2020

Couldn’t pass up the opportunity to talk you through how to get my fat ankle back down to size after it had a run-in with a knee cap.

You’ll notice I repeat certain words like MOVEMENT and LYMPH DRAIN and that’s because they are blasted important sooo hopefully it’s more educational than it is annoying lol.

Also talk some about the ICING controversy.

Anyone dealt with this type of injury?

ATTENTION:

Prices at FNXN Soft Tissue Therapy will be going up starting March 1st.

I love my job and I take it seriously. I put a high value on continuing education. In fact, I was DISAPPOINTED when the requirements for massage therapists for continuing education credits in Iowa were lowered. That being said, I usually go over the required limit by taking courses and seminars that I believe allow me to be better able to help my clients. I intentionally choose courses where I am surrounded by other health professionals such as athletic trainers, chiropractors, and physical therapists so that I can see other points of view on how to treat the body and know how and when to collaborate with others when soft tissue work alone is not enough to treat the issue. I don’t hesitate to refer a client to someone else (including other massage therapists) if I think they will be better able to help. As long as you get better, I’m happy.

I do not charge extra for any modality I use. When you book an appointment with me you get all the knowledge and techniques at my disposal, including myofascial release, cupping, trigger point therapy, deep tissue, IASTM, stretching, lymph draining, and FAKTR.

The seminars I am looking at for this year include some travel and very high level training that I believe will really up my game as a body worker.

These changes are a reflection of both the therapist I have become, the therapist I am working on becoming, and more in keeping with the average in the area with similar offerings.

Fire, police, active and retired military, and teachers will continue to receive $10 off any session.

New pricing will be as follows:

30min- $45
60min- $70
90min -$100

Thank you all so much for your support!

4. Lower abs need some love.

When doing lower abdominal work (leg raises etc) the common tendency is that our hip flexors jump in to help so the abs don’t get the work they need. Easy fix is to lay on the ground and press your back flat. At no time should your back arch and allow a gap from the floor. You’ll feel the difference immediately.

5. Psoas release.

The psoas is a very important hip flexor muscle that runs from your low back to your femur. It is almost always involved in low back pain because it influences the position of your low back and pelvis and it’s chronically tight nowadays because we sit so much. You can use the bell of a dumbbell to release it yourself! Draw an invisible line from your belly button to your iliac crest- the front/top of your hip bone. Psoas is right in the middle. Think of delivering pressure toward the spine, lock out and lift your leg, and curse my name. You’re welcome.

This is just the tip of the iceberg ya’ll. Want to know more of my lower back secrets? Message me to schedule.

Bulletproof Your Back Part 1:

A few of the things I’ve learned from chronic low back issues and 3 disc herniations.

1. If your back or core are WEAK, your back will hurt.

You may not be able to do the full movement if your back is acting up but you should be doing the movements that make it stronger. Ergo, I had Mat do some bar work specifically working on bracing through the movement to make his back less vulnerable. We started at the top so that he can decide how far down is comfortable- go to the point you start to feel the weakness or pain creep in and then HOLD. I think you’ll be surprised how quickly your back starts to fatigue.

2. Brace OUT.

Think of your core as a CYLINDER: abs in front, obliques around the sides, low back...then what? Pelvic floor and diaphragm on bottom and top. So instead of squeezing your abs, think of trying to expand that cylinder. When you do it right your back will feel weightless- the pressure and pain disappears. It’s a difficult skill to learn but once you do you’ll feel strength in a depth you didn’t know existed. The bar will feel lighter on your back and you’ll feel invincible. THIS IS WHAT BELTS ARE FOR!! The proper way to use a weight belt is to push out against it to create that abdominothoracic pressure to alleviate pressure on your lumbar spine. That belt isn’t going to support anything if you don’t use it right.

3. In core work, sometimes positional holds trump movement.

If we’re trying to strengthen the core because your back hurts when you squat (or want to increase your squat or deadlift) sit-ups aren’t going to help you. You need to strengthen your CORE not your ABS. Think about the role of the core when we squat heavy...it’s stabilizing your trunk and should be helping take some load off the spine. It doesn’t move much. So we should train it that way. Instead of repping out hip touches when in side plank position, HOLD the position. If you get to where one minute is easy, ADD WEIGHT and drop the time down to 30 seconds. We’ll never be holding a heavy bar on our back for more than a minute but the weight goes up (hopefully). Train accordingly.

Had so much fun teaching continuing education yesterday to a room full of my massage therapist colleagues! It was a full day of stretching specifically for athletes. An example of training through injury.

Chris tweaked an adductor while jumping an obstacle in a 5k this summer. He felt pain down his inner thigh all weekend and instead of cancelling our training session the following Monday (leg day), we put that adductor group to work.

A little soft tissue work, a good warm-up, and some deliberately-placed bands got him through the workout, the pain subsiding completely before the end of the session.

Muscles like to protect themselves. Any tiny little tweak and they like to curl up in the fetal position.

Sometimes all you need is to wake up the muscle groups involved, get them firing hard and remind them that it’s safe to move. Activating the muscles will protect it more than babying it.

I’ve dealt with so many injuries over the course of my athletic career. So. Many. I’ll be forever grateful to the badass massage therapists and health professionals that kept/keep me functional while training hard and competing. They inspired me to do the same for others.

Message for the day:
YOU CAN, AND SHOULD, KEEP MOVING WHILE DEALING WITH INJURIES.

Your training will look a little different. There will be things you shouldn’t do, and things you will have to add in to help you. You may need to do specific rehab work for the injured area, or you may need to rest it and work around it for a little bit.

BUT DON’T STOP MOVING!! Movement pushes blood and lymph through your body, which is crucial for healing. Our bodies are not made to be stagnant so it should come as no surprise that movement heals.

Plantar fasciitis pain anyone?

I treat from general to specific.

You come in with pain in your foot I’m likely going to work both legs and glutes then hone in on where it’s painful.

This addresses not only the area of pain but also any tissues that might be sneakily causing the issue from a distance. Usually the problem is not where the pain is.

Using #faktr to get my client some relief and get her back to moving better which is ESSENTIAL!
