As dietitians, we understand the importance of nutrition. But as moms, we also want our kids to grow up with a healthy relationship with food, and that includes Halloween candy! 🍭🍫
Research suggests that overly restricting certain foods can actually make them more desirable to children (and adults.) When candy is treated as something forbidden or only allowed as a reward, it can become more exciting and harder for us to regulate around.
Allowing kids to enjoy sweets without guilt or shame, while maintaining some structure around meals and snacks, can help them develop a more relaxed relationship with food.
And here’s something else worth remembering: Our overall eating patterns matter far more than what we eat on one particular day. A little extra sugar on Halloween isn’t going to undo the nutritious meals your family eats throughout the year. Of course, added sugar is something we want to be mindful of, and candy doesn’t offer much nutritional value. But that doesn’t mean it can’t have a place in a healthy diet.
We want our kids to understand that food nourishes our bodies, but it can also be part of celebrations, traditions, and making memories. So this Halloween, we’ll enjoy the candy, continue offering balanced meals, and move on with our normal routine.
If sugar feels overwhelming and you’re looking for support in building a healthier relationship with food for yourself or your family, we’d love to help! At Mission Dietitian, we believe nutrition should feel balanced, realistic, and free from unnecessary guilt all while supporting your health goals.
