I’ve kept my running posts pretty private lately. Not because I didn’t want to talk about it, but my thoughts have been so… all over the place.
For the last two years I’ve been fighting on and off various pains and injuries. It would be in different spots and always moving. Once I would “fix” the spot and feel better, something else would pop up. For months, things got better, and at the same time not get better.
When marathon training started things were more or less ok. Then I hit a massive wall. My body could not take the training anymore and I could feel it. I could hear my body begging me to stop it and just REST. So I did. I rested and I decided to start from square one.
The best part about fitness, is there’s no rule saying you can’t start over. You can restart and try again as many times as it takes. And my fitness gut knew that’s exactly what I needed.
I went to my physical therapist and we determined pretty much the entirely of my hips were just really weak and not taking on the workload it needed to sustain these long runs. So I shifted my focus: getting my hips strong, rewrite a workout program that supported on getting my body strong again, and build a better base for running.
Rebuilding is slow, and steady, and progressive. At moments it can feel tedious, but then moments, like this morning, where you can see where it pays off. To have my run feel SO easy, almost effortless, and yet see my pace be one of the fastest in a long time AND pain free, is such a huge win.
I’m not back up to my usual distance, and that is totally fine with me. Because I’m still doing short distances I could have my 12 year old son join me, and we LOVED it. We had such a great time together, even talking about doing it again in the future. That alone made it worth it. Being able to feel strong again and to feel present with my kids, I feel my life come in balance again.
Trust the process. Believe in yourself. And you can do ANYTHING. Take it from me.
