EPIC "Empowering People with Intellectual Challenges"

EPIC "Empowering People with Intellectual Challenges" Connecting people with disabilities to their communities Phone: (301) 516-7300 Website: http://www.epic-smvi.org EPIC, formerly known as Southern Maryland Vocational Industries is a not-for-profit organization that was founded in 1985 to support children with disabilities mainstream from special education into adulthood.
(1)

EPIC was founded in response to the realization of a group of parents that their children with disabilities would have no services or supports after graduation from special education classes. These parents banded together to devise a program that would enable their children and others to become gainfully employed adults. Over the years, EPIC evolved from primarily helping people with intellectual challenges get jobs to providing an array of support services. For over twenty years we have helped people become involved in their communities by pairing them with employers for jobs they enjoy working. Soon after, in 1989 we expanded our services to accommodate the needs of people’s housing limitations and opened our first community home. We now, provide services directly in the homes of families where reliable, trained professionals teach people various skills and attend community activities. Although we primarily provide services in Prince George’s county we also provide limited service in Montgomery and Charles counties.

Aaron has attended his day program since 1999 and moved into a group home in 2018.

When he left the Kent County school system in 1999, Linda and her husband were able to continue working full time because they knew their son, Aaron, would be safe and engaged and supported in productive work through his adult developmental disabilities day program.

In 2018, they were faced with the emotionally difficult decision for Aaron to move out of the family home and into his group home in Chestertown. While they would have preferred to keep their son at home with them, Linda and her husband are now 73 and 78 years old, and Aaron is 41 years old with a need for constant support from Direct Support Professionals. “I feel extremely lucky that Aaron will be able to live out his life close to home in the community he has lived in for all of his 41 years.” said Linda recently.

Providing a safe home is particularly important in the midst of a pandemic. People can only shelter at home if they have a home in which to live. For many people with disabilities, that also means having full-time staff support, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In the case of the DDA provider organization that supports Aaron, every one of the providers' group homes is open and fully staffed right now to keep the people they support safe and healthy. For the people who live in those homes, many of whom have underlying medical conditions, having a safe place to live means surviving a pandemic.

Now, the state leadership needs to make difficult decisions about how to revise the FY21 budget amid concerns about state revenue and we fear essential healthcare services like those provided through DDA may be at risk.
Governor Larry Hogan

As our community battles the Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), his donation will help protect the health and safety of the people we support and their staff by ensuring that they do not run out of the supplies needed to wash their hands frequently and disinfect surfaces regularly. #COVID19 #AccountAbilityMatters #expectationsmatter #disabilities #developmentaldisabilities #ThankYouThursday
