Earwax gets a bad reputation, but it is completely normal and serves a purpose. The problems start when too much builds up and does not clear on its own. A stuffed-up feeling, muffled sound, ringing, or hearing aids that are not performing like they should can all be signs that buildup is the issue. Myth: You would know right away if your hearing was getting worse. Fact: While there are certain conditions that can cause a sudden change in hearing, most often, hearing loss happens so gradually that many people do not notice for years. By the time it becomes obvious, it has often been a slow change building for a long time. This is exactly why a yearly hearing check matters, even if things seem fine. People often assume an audiologist just fits hearing aids. The truth is, my job covers a lot more ground than that. An Audiologist is a healthcare professional, who investigates WHY hearing your hearing has changed. In order to become an Audiologist, I have undergone rigorous clinical training and coursework to understand the entirety of the auditory system and obtain my Doctoral degree in this profession. With this knowledge, I am able to test and assess hearing across speech frequencies, identify disease/disorder of the auditory system, check ear canal health, assess balance and inner-ear function, identify tinnitus, and figure out the root cause of whatever is going on, whether that turns out to be a simple earwax blockage or something that needs a closer look.
