It’s OT Month!

We love our OTs. They work hard to help our students learn to cut, trace, color, write, learn self help skills, and help with their sensory needs. OTs use creative ways to help our students live their best lives. Give our OTs some virtual hugs and high fives as we celebrate OT month!

Our friends at Endless Highway are providing grants to families living with individuals with disabilities severely impacted by the health crisis. See the post below for more information.

Dear Friends, Supporters, Brothers and Sisters,

We wish we could present a gift or remedy that would ease this unprecedented turbulence that is a part of all of our lives. Endless Highway will be able to assist any child and young adult with a physical disability in Western New York whose family has been severely impacted financially due to the coronavirus through April 30th. Confidential, tax-free grants up to $750.00 per family are available through [email protected] by providing a brief overview of the negative impact due to the pandemic.

We offer these beautiful excerpts from Wendell Berry’s Prayers and Sayings of the Mad Farmer:

At night make me one with the darkness.
In the morning make me one with the light.

Don’t pray for the rain to stop.
Pray for good luck fishing when the river floods.

When I rise up let me be joyful like a bird.
When I fall let me fall without regret like a leaf.

Let me wake in the night and hear it raining and go back to sleep.

Make the human race a better head. Make the world a better piece of ground.

Life will get brighter…

Stay Healthy and Safe,
Rob Tortorella, Founder

Update from Douglas DiGesare, Chief Executive Officer of The Arc Erie County:

Good Afternoon Everyone,

As we enter our third week facing difficulties surrounding the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic, I would once again like to thank all our families and staff for their patience and understanding. We continue to adapt to the evolving mandates being put forth by our regulating government offices as well as implementing additional measures to keep our families, staff, and community as safe during these unprecedented times.

We have reassigned more than 50 team members from across the organization to staff and support our 25 residential sites across Erie County. Many of these employees already have extensive experience working with the people we support. This transition will allow us to continue providing the high quality supports that families have come to expect. We are also examining what steps need to be taken to re-start some of our programming within the framework of this existing environment. There will be more to come on that in the next several days as we receive guidance from OPWDD.

We continue to recruit for new Direct Support Professional positions. If you know someone that is currently seeking immediate employment, please have them call or text us at 716.346.0408 to speak to our hiring manager directly. They are also encouraged to apply at Arcjobs.org.

Our nursing and clinical team has also been working closely with the Erie County Department of Health and peer agencies from across the state to develop procedures to minimize spread of the virus. This includes an increase in temperature screening at all our locations, examining all of our existing health and safety protocols, and strict adherence to the suspension of visitors to our residential sites.

We are committed to keeping our families and staff regularly informed of any changes to our programs and will be sending out specific program updates to our families this week. For additional information and updates across all our program areas, please visit our website at ArcErieCounty.org.

I encourage you to continue practicing social distancing, wash your hands frequently, and limiting being around others if you are demonstrating any of the symptoms consistent with the COVID-19 Coronavirus – temperature of 100.4 or above, cough, or shortness of breath. If you are exhibiting any of these symptoms we ask that you remain at home and contact your Primary Care physician for further instructions.

We will get through this together.

PLEASE READ !!! REGARDING FAMILY VISITATION

Dear Families,

The Arc Erie County New York is making every effort to slow the spread of the COVID-19 Coronavirus to ensure the health and safety of your loved ones, families, employees, and the communities we support.

Upon recommendation of the New York State Office of People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), we can no longer allow any visitors to enter sites of The Arc Erie County New York effectively immediately. This includes the suspension of family visitation at all residential locations. We understand that this announcement is difficult but is being done with the well-being of your loved ones in mind.

We understand if you choose to pick up your loved ones to be with you at home during these difficult times. However, these individuals cannot return until visitation restrictions from OPWDD are changed. Following these measures is the only way to minimize the exposure and spread of COVID-19.

To read the complete statement regarding visitation from OPWDD, the link is available here.

https://opwdd.ny.gov/sites/default/files/documents/3.18.2020%20Visitation%20Guidance%20IRAs%20Community%20Residences%20and%20Private%20Schools.pdf

If you’ve recently visited with someone at The Arc Erie County and been asked by your health-care provider to self-quarantine or you’ve had close contact with a person diagnosed with COVID-19, please call 716.529.3051 immediately.

Just a reminder that it is everybody’s responsibility to minimize the risk to the people we support and to each other. All of us are making sacrifices in our lives but it is only through that commitment we can minimize the spread of the COVID-19 Coronavirus.
