Your midwife is not your doula, but many women hire a midwife and expect her to be one.

This doesn't mean she won't hold your hand, encourage you through a contraction, help you find a more comfortable position, or remind you just how capable you are. She will do that many times throughout your labor.

But her primary responsibility is to monitor your well-being and your baby's, assess how labor is progressing, recognize complications, and make clinical decisions when needed.

And that is a BIG responsibility that requires her full attention. Even the most attentive, loving midwife cannot be in two places at once or give uninterrupted hands-on support while simultaneously attending to every clinical responsibility.

Your doula has a different role. She's there to offer continuous support throughout labor. She can help you navigate the intensity, suggest comfort measures, offer reassurance, support your partner, and help you feel informed, heard, and cared for.

Our roles are complementary, not interchangeable.

If you have considered hiring a doula but haven't, consider this your sign.

The placenta is often called the “tree of life” and this is why. Check out this beauty!
I got to attend my first home birth as doula a couple weeks ago. Mom and dad did a beautiful job working together to deliver their baby. Talk about teamwork! With mom’s permission, I wanted to share this photo of the placenta that many people don’t get the opportunity to see post-birth. This is what houses baby during the 9 months of pregnancy, and comes out shortly after baby does. (And why you are told to take it easy after giving birth. You have a wound this size left behind inside of you). How amazing is this? ✨

This is fantastic!

Join Dr. Isaac and local midwife Kim Pekin for an educational conversation about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care—and how understanding the body’s natural design can help women feel informed, confident, and empowered throughout the process.

Dr. Isaac and Kim will explore the science and physiology behind natural birth, breastfeeding, and holistic postpartum care while discussing the different healthcare options available to women and their babies. With more than 20 years of experience supporting women through natural birth, Kim brings a wealth of practical knowledge and experience, while Dr. Isaac, backed by The Wellness Way philosophy and his specialty in pediatric chiropractic care, will share his perspective on maternal and infant health and the body’s innate ability to function and heal.

Together, they’ll discuss how supporting a woman’s health before, during, and after birth can influence the health and well-being of both mother and baby. Topics will include preparing the body for birth, understanding the natural birth process, breastfeeding, postpartum recovery, and ways families can make informed decisions about their care.

The goal is not to create fear around birth, but to alleviate fear through education. Birth is a powerful physiological process—not something women need to approach with fear. Understanding how the body is designed to work, knowing your options, and having the right support can help women enter birth feeling prepared rather than intimidated.

Come learn, ask questions, and discover what it can look like to align with the body’s natural design while making informed choices for your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey.

Gosh I just love my sweet clients, every last one of them! I much enjoy going and doing postpartum visits just as much as attending births. Your doula should feel like a sister and dear friend to you, especially by the time postpartum rolls around. 💝

Ecclesiastes 4:10-12
[10] For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! [11] Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? [12] And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken. (ESV)

This verse is heavy on my doula heart and especially my mother heart. Part of the reason I started all of this was because I am one of those mothers doing motherhood alone. I also reject the idea that "you cannot pour from an empty glass," because mothers do it daily. This does mean we sit with the lack, but we can accept it as a current reality we face.

Many mothers, especially today, do not have villages. Their family may be absent due to proximity, their inability to help with today’s busy schedules, or even the mother's choice to preserve the safety of her children. Many fathers are working long hours or multiple jobs; they may be absent in their children’s lives mentally or physically, or they may be present but completely burnt out as well.

Today is so divisive, driven by "all or nothing" beliefs, the idea that "you are either with us or against us." We see this in politics, in churches, and in mom groups; disagreements are seen as offensive. I believe that is counterproductive to healthy motherhood. I will also admit, I have been there as well. I’ve fallen into that trap of judgment before. I’ve been the mom who looked at another and thought I knew better, instead of realizing we were both just trying to survive. I've had to learn that locking arms is much more powerful than pointing fingers.

I know very few moms who aren't pouring from an empty cup. This verse is a call to sign up for that meal train for a newly postpartum mom, to help the mother struggling in the grocery store with her toddler, and to encourage another mother’s goals, even if they are different from what you would choose for your family. God's vision is for us to support one another. We have to consciously choose to be a part of "the village"; it doesn't come passively.

There is even a living visualization of this in our own bodies. A typical umbilical cord is divinely made of three 'strands' two arteries and one vein. They are incredibly strong and effective, withstanding nine months of pregnancy and the intensity of labor, even in most cases when there are knots or the cord is nuchal. If you have cut one you know they aren't fragile. They don’t break under the pressure; they sustain life through it. That is the kind of motherhood we need: a threefold cord that withstands the pressure because we aren't meant to carry the life-force alone.

We know a pregnancy can withstand and persevere with two "strands" (one artery and one vein), but it is riskier and less stable. It is also a beautiful representation of the grit that women have in motherhood even when not fully supported! We can do it alone or just with our partners, but we were designed for the three.
