STUDENT PEACE AWARD TO SHAAN CHUDASAMA!
We have just been notified that Shaan Chudasama will be recognized with the Student Peace Award of Fairfax County on March 12th. The Student Peace Awards of Fairfax County have been recognizing Fairfax County students for their contributions to peace and community service since 2006. Per their website… “Peacemaking is vital in our world, so students active in the pursuit of peace should be encouraged in every way possible.” (http://fairfax.studentpeaceawards.org/). Congratulations Shaan!
Please navigate to the Student Peace Awards’ page and LIKE them! (https://www.facebook.com/Student-Peace-Awards-of-Fairfax-C…/)

Welcome Student Peace Awards of Fairfax County was begun in 2006 with the hope of encouraging people to think more about peace as both a means and an end, and to recognize young people who work as peacemakers. We started with one school (Herndon High School) and one sponsor (Herndon Friends Meeting...

CONGRATS to OUR PVSA WINNERS!!!

Kudos to Young at Art members who earned five more Presidential Volunteer Service Awards for 2016 for their service to the community!

HEROBOTS WIN 1st PLACE at REGIONAL FLL TOURNAMENT – QUALIFY FOR STATES!
The Herobots won 1st Place overall at the Falls Church FIRST Lego League (FLL) Robotics competition, plus the 2nd Place for Robot Performance. Their win qualifies them for the VA-DC FLL State Tournament at James Madison University (JMU) in Harrisonburg, Virginia the first weekend in December. Their long-term research project was on disease detecting dogs, and the core idea that they presented to University of Pennsylvania’s Dr. Lorenzo Ramirez was to use chemical reactions to enhance the smells to improve early detection of target conditions by disease-detecting dogs. Dr. Ramirez noted that he had not seen that idea proposed before, and would share it with his colleagues at UPENN, as well as researchers at other universities and in the UK. Young at Art has supported the team as sponsor and coaching support, and helped them with outreach to help educate the community on the concept of disease-detecting dogs and successes to-date so that they have access to more samples for their research.

CON FE Y ALABANZA MISIONES EN GUATEMALA!
Our 2nd international project was in partnership with Arlington’s Fe y Alabanza Misiones travelling to Guatemala to fix up the Puerta del Cielo (Gateway to the Sky) school in San Rafael, outside Guatemala City. We collected books, toys and clothing for the school, donated art and sports supplies, and cash to so that they have enough supplies for their studies and extracurricular activities throughout the year.

SUPPORTING THE BAN KRU NOI PROJECT

Whenever we travel now, we like to do what we can to work with and help out local children and others. On our recent trip to Thailand, we visited the Kru Noi, who has dedicated her life to serving orphans in after she suffered a heart attack and was partially paralyzed. Her “Ban Kru Noi Project” brings together orphans from the outskirts of Bangkok to teach them arts and crafts, getting them off the streets and provide them with a basic education so they have an opportunity to continue their studies. While not all of them do so, some have gone on to higher education, as was her vision. We visited the orphanage, met with Kru Noi, met and worked with the kids who were there that day, and made a donation to help them buy supplies and expand service to the orphans. It was such a great experience working Kru Noi – the more we see, the more we realize that it is the local level support on the ground that makes such a difference. Money and other resources are of course necessary but without the real heroes like Kru Noi, the resources would never have their intended effect.

SUNRISE SPRING PROJECTS
We were back at Sunrise during the spring for our Easter event, complete with umbrellas and Easter baskets. These will be displayed around the lobby and some of the residents rooms to remind them of the season. Other activities included general art projects to get the residents working with their hands, making things, using their creativity, and of course just plain talking and listening to stories.

YAPping in Loudoun!
Great to work with the Loudoun Young Athletes Program again. This week we wrapped up our third year working with them at the Northern Virginia Gymnastics Academy on the trampoline, climbing ramps, jumping off the edges, hanging off the ropes, walking the balance beam, tossing the ball, and so much more. Can never tell who’s enjoying it more – them or us?

PRESIDENTS DAY AT SUNRISE
We worked with residents on Presidents-themed projects for this election year. We got to listen to a great many stories of prior elections, candidates, and just plain life. Some said it’s crazier than ever, others that nothing has changed, and some that really didn’t care :) As far as we’re concerned, they’re all right :)

CLOSING OUT 2015 AT SUNRISE!

Six of us went out and worked with Sunrise residents the day after Christmas. Excited to be back after a while. Got a chance to do some various art projects with the residents, and spread some holiday cheer before ringing in 2016.

A quick shout-out to everyone who joined us for Young at Art’s first self-designed, self-funded, enrichment program for Special Olympics Young Athletes Program participants at the Vienna Community Center. Our program included arts, crafts, and sports stations that helped further develop the kids’ motor skills, creativity and self-confidence through series of progressive activities to engage and excite the young athletes through one-on-one and small-group coaching.

Nearly 20 Young Athletes participated in our first program, which spanned eight sessions, and we’ve got lots of great ideas for next year’s programs. Thanks to everyone who came out and had a blast with us!

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year and all the best for 2016 from the Young at Art team. We are looking forward to our first enduring project and international work this year, and hope that many of you will be able to join us. Have a spectacular year, and see y'all soon!

Finished delivering Young at Art's first self-funded, self-designed program with the Special Olympics Virginia - Potomac Region Young Athletes Program in August. Had a great time working with kids on art and sports related activities during the 8 full sessions we held at the Vienna Community Center. Great turnout, and lots of great ideas how to make next year's program even bigger and better. Look forward to seeing everyone again next time.

Young at Art started a new program at Sunrise Assisted Living that improves residents' fine motor skills through various art projects. At the first session, residents used water colors to paint their own interpretations of one of Meghan's paintings. The day was a great success, and we are looking forward to the next session!

We had a wonderful experience helping the Special Olympics children with many different activities that involved playing with different toys, practicing different motor skills, and increasing their self-confidence. It was a humbling experience for us, and we can't wait to see them again each weekend during this program.
