A note from Dr. Paige Walend.

Hi!

The really lovely hike to a stunning 100 plus foot waterfall here in NC was going perfectly well until the thunderstorm came. We were rushing to get out and I decided to avoid a particularly marshy puddle. But the bank by it decided to slide out from under my right foot and not only did I fall into the marshy puddle, but I did a spectacular job of breaking my right ankle. We sent two wonderful mountain bikers to call for help (no cell service). Another group of hikers who had just passed us came back to help. And my amazing sister-in-law, who has rescue training (pediatrician who used to do ski patrol) jumped in to help. Two hours later the best rescue team ever, the Transylvania Rescue Squad (all volunteers) and the Transylvania Ambulance team came in and got us out.

I will be flying back to Phoenix tomorrow but, surprisingly, (not) I won’t be in the office (probably not this week). I will need a surgical repair (because if I am going to break something, I’m going to go all out). If you have an appointment this week, the office will be contacting you once we figure things out. If you need things, please call the office first or use the portal. I may or may not be answering texts (depending on the pain meds, it could get a little incoherent… ) I’ll be checking messages and have a whole team of people and partners who will be helping make sure everything is taken care of. And Nada and Melanie will be available to help see you if you are sick and need to get in. We are still doing covid car swabs as well.

I’ll keep you posted once I know the order of events.

Stay healthy, And, if given the choice, maybe the marshy puddle isn’t so bad after all…. I did end up landing there anyway.

Hi,
Happy New Year to you all!
There is an update on the www.maricopa.gov website as of this morning that Maricopa County will be starting Phase 1B registration for vaccinations on MONDAY JANUARY 11,2021. You can check the website now, but you will not be able to register for the vaccine until Monday. The updated information is found at: https://www.maricopa.gov/5651/Phase-1B
For clarification here are the PHASES:
1A: Healthcare workers, Emergency Medical Services Workers, Long-term Care Facility Staff and Residents
1B: Priority: Education and Childcare Providers, Law Enforcement/Protective Services, Adults Age 75 and Older; non-priority: Other Essential Workers (power and utility workers, food and agriculture related occupations, transportation and moving material occupations state and local government workers providing critical services, other essential workers – not quite sure who that is…) and Adults Living in Congregate Settings (assisted living, etc) with High-Risk Medical Conditions.
1C: Adults 65 and Older, Adults of Any Age with High-Risk Medical Conditions
As you can see, 1B is an enormous group of people. I am sure the website will be crazy as people rush to get registered. Try to be patient.
The way it worked for us (Healthcare workers) was that we registered and then (in a few days) received an email with a link to create an account and then schedule an appointment. When you schedule the appointment, you will need your insurance information handy. After that we got an email with a bar code to print out or have on our phone to take to the appointment and it included directions about what to bring and where to go. The actual vaccine part was a piece of cake, as long as you can drive between the orange cones. You don’t even have to get out of the car!
Hopefully the pharmacies will have finished providing vaccines to the skilled nursing facilities and be included in the options for appointments for 1B.
Again, try to be patient and kind. This is a logistical nightmare and there are a lot of people who are eager to get vaccinated. The volunteers, nurses, and national guardsmen, as well as the health department employees are all doing their best to get it to as many people as possible as quickly as they can.
As far as side effects, really, that shingles vaccine was WAY worse. A little sore arm and kind of tired and achy on day two. But I’ll take it compared to Covid. I’ll let you know if round two is any worse after I get the second one on Monday 1/11.

COVID-19 VACCINE - PHASE 1B

Updates:
This is preliminary information about Phase 1B rollout. Please check back here for updates as we have them.

On Monday, January 11th, we will open up vaccination scheduling at Point of Dispensing sites for Phase 1B prioritized individuals (see Who Can Be Vaccinated below).

Information on where vaccine will be distributed and how to access scheduling systems will be posted on this page beginning on Monday, January 11th. There is no sign-up process available prior to Jan. 11th.
Appointments will be limited initially for Phase 1B and will be available at POD sites that are not already fully-booked for second doses to prioritized individuals from Phase 1A.
People in both Phase 1A and Phase 1B will be able to register and search for any available appointments that are not already filled by prioritized healthcare personnel.
As operations are ramped up to support Phase 1B vaccination efforts, we anticipate more options for vaccination outside of POD sites will be available to prioritized groups soon. This may include vaccinations at pharmacies for those age 75 and older and employer-based vaccination events through providers who have onboarded through the ADHS COVID-19 vaccine provider onboard system.
During this time of limited vaccine availability, it is our highest priority to ensure every eligible, prioritized Maricopa County resident who wants to be vaccinated has access to do so, in the timeliest manner possible.

Once vaccine becomes more widely available, our goal is to provide every resident the opportunity for a COVID-19 vaccine.

Who Can Be Vaccinated in Phase 1B (Priority)
Eligible populations in Phase 1B prioritized are:

K-12 school staff and childcare workers
Law Enforcement/Protective Services*
Adults age 75 and older
*This includes all sworn officers and government-employed security officers.

NOTE: Adults living in congregate settings and other essential workers (to be determined) will be prioritized for vaccination in Phase 1B after these groups.

At your appointment, please be prepared to show 1) your appointment confirmation, and 2) a form of ID confirming your Phase 1B employment, such as a work ID or paystub, or an ID that shows your age if you are 75+.

Why Appointments Will Be Limited Initially
The first appointments for Phase 1B individuals will be available at POD sites that are not already fully-booked for second doses to individuals from Phase 1A, starting on Monday, January 11th.

More appointments will become available when:

More vaccine doses are available
Other POD sites complete their second-dose appointments so that additional appointments can be opened to Phase 1B individuals
As operations are ramped up to support Phase 1B vaccination efforts, we anticipate more options for vaccination outside of POD sites will be available to prioritized groups soon. This may include vaccinations at pharmacies for those age 75 and older and employer-based vaccination events through private vendors. Public Health is working closely with state and local partners to facilitate agreements that will allow vaccine to be allocated for these types of distribution efforts. More information will be released as it becomes available.

How You Can Make an Appointment
Starting Monday, January 11th, anyone eligible in Phase 1B prioritized groups (see above) can begin to schedule appointments for January 11th or further out as the registration system allows. People in both Phase 1A and Phase 1B will be able to register and search for any available appointments that are not already filled by prioritized healthcare personnel.

Individuals will be asked a few questions to determine their eligibility on the registration site. There will be no separate prescreen form to fill out. Additional information about this sign-up process will be shared on this page in the coming days, so check back for more information.

For those in the Phase 1B prioritized groups of law enforcement/protective services or who work in education, please first check with your employer before making an appointment using this system. They may have more information on other vaccine distribution plans for you based on your employment.

Why You Need An Appointment
As stated previously, vaccine availability is limited at this time and we must ensure every dose is utilized to protect our highest risk populations, like YOU! Making an appointment ensures we have measures in place to establish eligibility and allows you to schedule your appointment when it best fits your schedule. Scheduling is also critical to ensure we can plan ahead to have the right number of doses on hand at a POD site so we don’t waste any vaccine. And, it helps with a smoother delivery process for everyone involved at the drive-through POD sites, all of which are staffed by trained medical volunteers.

Please note that in order to be vaccinated, you will need to be a member of the current phase (1A or 1B prioritized), schedule an appointment, and provide appropriate identification once you arrive at the vaccination site.

More information will be posted on this page in the coming days about Phase 1B prioritized vaccination. Additional information for other Phase 1B groups, adults living in congregate settings and other essential workers, will also be shared as it becomes available.

For answers to other common questions about the vaccine, please see the full COVID-19 FAQs.

About the Vaccine
Safety is a top priority in delivering a COVID-19 vaccine. Once a company develops a vaccine, it must go through a rigorous scientific testing process before it can be submitted to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA independently reviews the information from these tests to make sure the vaccine is safe and works well, and then decides whether the vaccine can be licensed and made available to the public.

The FDA granted an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine on Dec. 11. According to clinical trial data reviewed by the FDA, the most commonly reported side effects, which typically lasted several days, were pain at the injection site, tiredness, headache, muscle pain, chills, joint pain, and fever. Of note, more people experienced these side effects after the second dose than after the first dose, so it is important for vaccination providers and recipients to expect that there may be some side effects after either dose, but even more so after the second dose.

After a vaccine is authorized for use, multiple safety monitoring systems are in place to watch for possible adverse events. If an unexpected serious adverse event is detected, experts work as quickly as possible to determine whether it is a true safety concern.

Vaccine Records
You will receive a vaccination record that shows which vaccine you received and when so you are able to track which vaccine you need for your second dose and when you will need to receive the second dose
