Bryce Berryhill understands to***co farming. His family has been doing it for generations in Person County, North Carolina.

What Berryhill says he doesn’t understand, though, is how his livelihood will be affected by the development of AI datacenters nearby.

Over 172,000 acres of unsullied North Carolina backcountry could soon lose a vital protection keeping them undeveloped.

After the public comment period closed Oct. 6, the U.S. Department of Agriculture will make its decision on whether to repeal a Clinton-era protection that covers almost 45 million acres of forest and grassland nationally, including 38 roadless areas in North Carolina.

The year was 1979, a time before one-and-done players. Before NIL. Before Congress got involved in college athletics. A time when coaches not only got to teach the game of basketball but also the game of life.

Dean Smith used his position as a coach to expose his players to societal issues beyond the basketball court, and visiting Central Prison was one of those opportunities.

On Nov. 3, voters across the country will get in line to cast their ballots. But for out-of-state North Carolina college students, getting to the polls might require jumping a few additional hurdles.

Digital One Cards are now the only widely distributed form of student identification on campus, and have come to serve all of the same purposes as a physical One Card. Except for being accepted as a valid form of voter ID.

In North Carolina's rural counties, churches are often bastions of the community, connecting its citizens and providing important social functions. However, they also face aging membership and transportation barriers, among other constraints.

Critically, these churches often struggle to recruit and retain ministers, leading to a “drought” among rural pastors.

Today, many continue to hold conversations about when Flock cameras pose a threat. In July, the North Carolina State Budget authorized the use of automatic license plate readers, or ALPRs, across all state-maintained roadways. Many towns and universities have also bought into the technology, with UNC-Chapel Hill entering a contract with Flock Safety in February 2024 for the implementation of 23 cameras across campus.

As $20,000 dorm rooms make headlines and dorm designing emerges as a new career path, the trend has yet to make as big, or costly, of an impact in North Carolina. At least for now.

Astronaut training and chocolate chip cookies went hand in hand at the Morehead Planetarium from the late 1950s to the mid 1970s. The biggest names in spaceflight needed fuel for the hours of celestial navigation training they would go through in the 68-foot dome.
