OHIO!👋 I’m headed to you next week to do a day of Embalming technical training! 🛫 Still time to register!

I designed this extended program for embalmers & funeral practitioners who wish to deepen their technical expertise in embalming, restorative art, & cosmetic mortuary theory. This presentation integrates advanced embalming analysis, restorative techniques for both minor and complex cases, donor-specific considerations, and cosmetic aptitude to achieve successful open-casket outcomes. Instruction will be a blend of lecture, demo, and case review to provide a holistic and practical framework for handling the wide range of cases embalmers may face.

Program Breakdown:
Part I – Embalming Foundations & Case Analysis (45 min): Embalming goals, family communication, circulation challenges, chemical considerations

Part II – Restorative Techniques: From Minor to Complex (60 min): Tissue repair, waxing, bruising coverage, tumor/facial restoration, cranial/mandible overview, & collab of attendees for sharing tips & techniques

Part III – Donor Case Considerations (45 min): Donor-specific technical approaches, chemical strategies, honoring the gift of life

Part IV – Cosmetic Mortuary Theory & Application (60 min): Principles of mortuary color theory, airbrush vs. hand application, blending and texturing, achieving natural results

Part V – Case Study & Integration (30 min): Complex case walk-through, before/after review, discussion and Q&A

Quite literally a month behind, but this happened for the September issue. I’m so incredibly honored to have been asked to do this by Kates-Boylston and to share my story of the way I found myself into funeral service & death care. Imposter syndrome is real big, but I hope it inspires those that don’t come from a traditional funeral home background that they too can weave their way into the funeral world and make an impact. I’m also grateful to share and stress the invaluable gifts of a peaceful final viewing and educating families on rituals they can do to continue their care of their loved one even after death. ❤️ Always onward.

Profoundly grateful to be invited on this panel today at The Green-Wood Cemetery event entitled “Death by Design: Science, Restoration, and Ritual” to share my experience as an embalmer.

Honestly, public-facing events have become some of my most treasured speaking engagements because there is so much hunger for knowledge of what we do, what we can accomplish, and what’s possible when it comes to embalming and restoration of decedents. I LOVE the questions and I LOVE the open dialogue and discussion that evolves in these experiences.

Also so grateful to be alongside Jennifer Muldowney 💫 The Glam Reaper Muldowney Memorials and Chris Thompson for this, and moderated by the amazing Shelby Marquardt ✨ And a special thanks to Gabrielle Ungaro-Gatto for her diligent work in developing this panel.

PS- What made today even more special was my mom and one of my girls tagging along! 💕

Be a more thoughtful:

Embalmer.

It’s really that easy when you have this frame of mind. I see too many people out there in camps of only embalming vs. no embalming mindsets when actually it should be viewed this way if we were truly acting from a place of putting the family’s needs first. I view embalming as part of a greater decision - How do I best achieve their loved one’s (or their own) wishes post-death?

I often wonder if the embalming vs. no embalming horse blinders are an issue of purely the US, or to what extent it exists elsewhere when I see the natural effects of death more accepted in other countries. I love conducting natural burials as much as I love embalming and restoring, because at the heart of it I just love being able to give those grieving the experiences they need in the best possible way.

As Dr. D might say, “Stat curious” my friends.

My August Book Nook for American Funeral Director magazine is a tender story originally published in Sweden about a group of kids that make it their job to care for all the animals and bugs they find that have died - aka funeral directors in training. 🥹

It is a great story that reminds us adults how children can approach death with both curiosity and rituals of remembrance. Through them we see that even the smallest acts of care can be meaningful ways to honor a life, and that all life has value to be respected.

If you’re a funeral professional, I highly suggest having this on hand for families that may need an introduction to death or perhaps have kids that are exploring the ideas of death through play. It’s a mini chapter book and children ages 7 and up can likely read it on their own as well. ☺️

Thank you NYS Funeral Dir. Assn. for inviting me to come speak at your Annual Convention in Saratoga on The Value of Viewing! I absolutely loved how engaged the crowd was and how it transformed into conversations about the topics I broached during several parts of it.

With this being close to home, bb wanted to come see the conference so we did some trick-or-treating practice around the expo hall in the morning too before her great aunt picked her up. ❤️ Stacy Vertucci found us to remind her that I took her at just two weeks old to do a reconstruction case and has a photo of her with her son together in the funeral home in their car seats, hehe. 💕 Also SO HAPPY to see Hollis Funeral Home 😄🥰

I’m so grateful to Nat'l Funeral Directors Assoc. and RememberingALife for giving me the opportunity to write about a topic that is so close to my heart. This article I wrote for the general public is now available to read up on their blogs section of their website.

Families experiencing early pregnancy loss, stillbirth, or neonatal death deserve to know they have options for honoring their baby and creating meaningful memories. My hope is that this article helps bring greater awareness, compassion, and support to those who need it most.

If you find this article helpful, or if it resonates with you, please share it so that it may reach a wider audience. Thank you. 💕
