The Black Autist is a blog where posts are focused on not only autism acceptance but also issues and news surrounding autistic people of color, especially those in the African Diaspora. It is also the place to share blogs, resources, websites, events, works and info on important icons/heroes in the community of autistic POCs.

Andrea Dalzell, known as "The Seated Nurse," has used a wheelchair since age 5 due to transverse myelitis. Despite facing discrimination along the way, she stayed committed to becoming a nurse.

She made history as the first female wheelchair user to graduate from New York University's accelerated nursing program, and now works at one of New York City's top hospitals.

Today, Andrea works to challenge stereotypes about disability and improve accessibility in healthcare, believing that a disability is just one part of who someone is not the whole story.

I do not have DMs turned on here because every single week someone was coming for me. Racists. Sexists. Ableist trash people, all in my inbox. Sometimes, they threaten me and it didn't bother me until I started traveling more and my locations and dates and times were listed. One made sure to let me know they knew where I was gonna be.

As some of you can tell, I do not bring the boys with me much on trips these days. And I might not do it as much as I used to. That is unfortunate, but its just me and I have to keep them safe.

You'd be surprised how many people are like, "who would come after you, you write children's books..."

That aint all I do.
And look how they doing Ms. Rachel.

My existence is too much for so many. I ain't gotta do a thing but be unapologetically Black, love tf out of myself, heal out loud and help others to do the same; fiercely protect and love on my boys, and call out people who want less for me and others.

That is all it takes.

I couldn't even post about doing grown up things with my extra grown up self without some bottom feeders popping up in my comments on some tomfoolery.

Baby, these is 41 year old knees and I be both praying and twerking on them. FYM.

I am gonna continue living in my supreme era right now. Nobody gonna shrink me and I aint about to let some goofy try and tell me that something this cute ain't got no business acting like it ain't this cute.

Let me be pretty and plot my plan for world dominance in peace. TF.

Try yoga, not me.

In other news, I have an old Polaroid and it be giving me the best photos.

[ID: Tiffy, Bootyful (yams not posted, yall so thirsty lol) Black woman looking like the grandma who taught her everything she knows about being the mama and advocate that she is. She is looking towards the camera with her head slightly turned to the left side of the picture. Nose is big and wide, like Black folks noses do. She has the gift of her father's eyes but not his presence. Tiffy has bags under her eyes that have been with her since birth. She been tired of this world since then. Her eyebrows are bushy, got a little arch to them, a little sparse, cause she aging, so her eyebrow hair is leaving a little bit. She gives a soft smile. Her hair is wet looking and a bit wavy. Falls past her shoulders. Its black with streaks of some of Beyonce blondes that she been rocking throughout the years. Does she look like Beyonce? No. But she is one fine ass Tiffy tho. Her chocolate brown skin is hydrated and glowing. The image is grainy and vintage looking because it is a polaroid.]

We are pleased to announce that Diana Martha Louis's book, COLORED INSANE, has won the Disability History Association's 2026 Outstanding Book Award.

In this book, Diana Martha Louis explores Black experiences and views of mental disability in the nineteenth century, shedding light on the lives and struggles of the “colored insane.”

Combining literary and historical analysis, she offers a rich account of nineteenth-century Black Americans’ experiences of mental illness and wellness. https://buff.ly/h9lYkaw

The data is official. The CDC Emergency Alert published by Disability Community for Democracy achieved massive reach, but visibility alone does not build a sustainable platform. Right now, our community does not have our own independent, long-term national media infrastructure, and the only way we are going to secure it is by actively competing in and winning major initiatives like this contest.

A standard like on this post carries zero weight inside the national Top Host Competition. The critical deadline to determine who advances hits tomorrow night, Thursday, October 22, at 10:00 PM Eastern. We have been plateaued at #5 since Friday, and to break into the Top 4 before the cutoff, we need real action to guarantee our platform's survival, not a passive scroll.

If you want to see permanent, sustainable, and disability-led media on the mainstream airwaves, please take ten seconds to complete your daily step right now. The path to support us is in the comments section below.
