Sparks, Radiation, Fume: 3 Hazards, 3 Defences
Three hazards in one weld. Three completely different defences. ๐ฅ
Most welding injuries happen because all the hazards get treated as one problem โ "put on a mask and get on with it."
Swipe through and separate them:
๐น SPARKS & SPATTER โ burns, clothing ignition
โ Flame-retardant workwear made for welding, plus leather apron and gauntlets. A cotton shirt or synthetic fleece is not protection โ some synthetics melt onto skin.
๐น RADIATION โ "arc eye", skin burn
โ A filter shade matched to your process and amperage. Even short exposure without a filter can cause a painful burn, and symptoms often show up hours later โ which is why it gets under-reported.
๐น FUME โ metal fume fever, long-term lung damage
โ Extraction at the source first, then respiratory protection. And remember: a P2 mask is a particulate filter โ it does not handle every component of welding fume.
Buyers, one practical takeaway: when you compare quotes, compare the hazard each item is rated for โ not just the unit price. "Cheapest welding mask" is not a spec.
Save this for your next welding risk assessment. ๐
