🍎🧁Is sugar really the problem… or is there more to the story?

“Sugar is bad.”
“Carbs make you gain weight.”
“Fruit has too much sugar.”
“I have no self-control around sweets.”
“I just need more willpower.”

Sound familiar? 👀

The conversation around sugar can get VERY black-and-white — but nutrition and our relationship with food are a lot more nuanced.

On the latest Your Life Nutrition Podcast, I’m giving you a sneak peek into our Good Sugar, Bad Sugar book study and exploring questions like:

🍭 Why do we crave sugar in the first place?
🧠 Is it really about willpower — or do our habits, stress and environment play a bigger role?
🍎 Is the sugar in fruit the same as added sugar?
📈 What actually happens to blood sugar when we eat carbohydrates?
❤️ Can we support our metabolic health without becoming afraid of food?

Here’s one of the biggest things I want you to remember:

An apple and a piece of candy may both contain sugar, but that doesn’t make them nutritionally equivalent.

And the goal isn’t to never raise your blood sugar or never eat sugar again.

It’s learning how to build an eating pattern that supports your blood sugar, metabolism and overall health — while still allowing you to enjoy your food. 🙌

✈️ How I keep my blood sugar balanced while traveling — without missing out on the trip! 🤠🌵

I spent this past week in Austin, Texas on my husband’s work trip, and it was a great reminder that your health goals don’t have to disappear when you travel!

I’m not aiming for perfection. I focus on a few habits that help me feel good, support my blood sugar, and stay consistent:

🥚 Protein + fiber at meals. Eggs, breakfast meat + berries made an easy, filling breakfast.

🎒 Pack snacks. I brought Mission Meats sticks, protein + collagen packets, roasted edamame, Catalina Crunch, sugar-free chocolate chips + electrolytes. This saves money AND ensures I have options!

🚶‍♀️ Walk when you can. We explored Austin on foot, walked to the Cathedral + Capitol, and chose walking over Uber when possible. (But yes, we took the elevator to our room on the 33rd floor. 😂)

🏋️‍♀️ Use the hotel gym. We started our mornings with steps + strength training before heading out.

🥗 Find customizable meals. CAVA, Sweetgreen + Modern Market made it easy to build bowls with plenty of protein and veggies.

🍔 Always ask! Our group wanted Five Guys at the airport, so I asked for my burger as a bowl with extra lettuce, mushrooms + onions. Delicious AND an easy way to make the meal work for me!

💦 Stay hydrated. I brought my Clearly Filtered bottle and plenty of electrolytes for all that Texas heat + walking.
💧 Comment WATER for the bottle link!

🛒 Plan for coming home. I meal planned and scheduled our Instacart delivery while waiting at the airport. We got home late, and groceries arrived the next morning! 🙌

Healthy travel doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing.

Enjoy the restaurants. Explore the city. Eat foods you love. AND keep a few habits that help you feel your best. ❤️

🎙️ Want me to break down ALL of these tips?

Comment TRAVEL and I’ll send you Episode 156 of the Your Life Nutrition Podcast! ✈️🎧

Healthy living has to work in REAL LIFE — even when you’re away from home. ❤️

What if your blood sugar looks “normal”… but your body is actually working overtime producing insulin to keep it there? 👀

This is one of the reasons understanding INSULIN—not just glucose—is so important for metabolic health.

In this week’s NEW podcast episode, we’re talking about something you may have never heard of:

✨ The Food Insulin Index ✨

You’ve probably heard of the Glycemic Index, but the Insulin Index asks a different question:

👉 How much insulin does your body release in response to a particular food?

And the answers may surprise you!

🥩 Foods with very little carbohydrate can still stimulate insulin.

🥤 Whey protein can create a significant insulin response despite having very little impact on blood sugar.

📈 Two meals with similar amounts of carbohydrate don’t necessarily require the same amount of insulin.

🩸 And with insulin resistance, blood sugar may remain relatively normal for a period of time because the pancreas is producing MORE insulin to keep it there.

But this does NOT mean insulin is bad or that we should simply try to eat foods with the lowest Insulin Index.

The goal isn’t to eliminate insulin. The goal is to help our bodies become more insulin sensitive. 🙌

🎙️ Listen to the new podcast episode for a preview, then join me TONIGHT, September 21st at 8 PM EST inside the Goal Getters Group for our live training:

✨ ALL ABOUT THE INSULIN INDEX ✨

We’re diving deeper into:

✔️ Glycemic Index vs. Insulin Index
✔️ The connection between insulin resistance & insulin demand
✔️ Foods with surprisingly high and low insulin responses
✔️ Why different proteins affect insulin differently
✔️ Why whey protein can significantly stimulate insulin
✔️ What happens when we combine foods into mixed meals
✔️ What this research actually means for blood sugar, insulin resistance & metabolic health

And most importantly—we’ll talk about how to use this information without becoming afraid of food or insulin.

A DIETITIAN’S TRADER JOE’S HAUL 🛒
What I’m actually buying for my family

As a Registered Dietitian who focuses on mindful eating, weight loss & blood sugar balance, I’m looking for foods that help make healthy eating easier AND foods my family genuinely enjoys. While also prioritizing foods that don’t have added sugar to help support healthy blood sugar levels!

A few things that made it into my cart this trip:

🍄 Shiitake mushrooms — an easy way to add more plants, fiber and flavor to meals - I love adding these to my egg bakes!

🍔 Turkey burgers - simple ingredients and perfect lean protein for burger bowls!

🍌Freeze dried fruit - my kids love these as a crunchy sweet snack plus they have no added sugar and are perfect for travel or on the go! It goes great in a homemade trail mix!

🥥 Unsweetened coconut flakes — great for adding texture, healthy fats and fiber and perfect for baking!

🌶️ Pepita + pineapple salsa — such a fun fall flavored salsa and great for burrito bowls!

🥗 Green Goddess & Caesar Dressings + seasonings — easy flavor can make vegetables and salads much more enjoyable

🍫 Dark chocolate chips — because chocolate is a must for me everyday! Bonus that this one has no sugar & is DAIRY FREE!

🍎 Apple chips — another crunchy option when you want something sweet - such a perfect fall snack and totally tastes like the bagged apple chips but no added sugar!

🌿 Capers — little additions that can completely change a meal

🔥TJ Buffalo Sauce - this is a total dupe of the Primal Kitchen Avocado Oil Buffalo Sauce - and it’s way cheaper! I’ll use this for our slow cooker Buffalo chicken prepped protein!

And yes… I bought plants & flowers too because Trader Joe’s has the BEST ones! 💐

🍎 We went apple picking this weekend, and it got me thinking…

How many people have stopped eating—or started limiting—fruit because they’re worried about the sugar? 🍓🫐🍎

I hear it all the time, especially from people who are working on weight loss, insulin resistance, prediabetes, or better blood sugar:

“But doesn’t fruit have a lot of sugar?”
“Won’t fruit spike my blood sugar?”
“Should I be avoiding bananas, grapes, or apples?”

Here’s the thing: fruit DOES contain natural sugar and carbohydrates—but that doesn’t mean we need to fear it! 🙌

Whole fruit also gives us fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, hydration, and beneficial plant compounds. And HOW you eat your fruit can make a big difference in your blood sugar response.

Tonight inside the Goal Getters Group, we’re diving into:

🍓 Which fruits are better choices for blood sugar
🥜 What to pair with fruit to help reduce a glucose spike
🚶‍♀️ Why movement after eating can help
🧃 Whole fruit vs. fruit juice
⚖️ Fruit, weight loss & metabolic health
🌱 How fruit can help you reach your fiber and plant goals

Our goal isn’t to become afraid of foods because they contain carbohydrates. It’s to learn how to eat them strategically as part of a balanced diet.

🥗 MEAL PREP DOESN’T HAVE TO TAKE HOURS!

If the words meal prep make you picture spending your entire Sunday cooking, chopping, and portioning out meals… this episode is for you. 🙌

🎙️ Episode 153: Meal Prep Made Simple: How to Plan Ahead Without Spending Hours in the Kitchen

We’re talking about how a little planning can make healthy eating SO much easier during a busy week—without feeling like you have to prep every single meal ahead of time.

In this episode, I’m sharing practical ways to:

✨ Make meal planning feel less overwhelming
🥗 Prep ingredients that can be used in multiple meals
⏰ Save time during busy weekdays
🛒 Be more intentional with your grocery shopping
💪 Make it easier to follow through with your nutrition goals
❤️ Create a meal prep routine that actually works for YOUR life

Remember: meal prep doesn’t have to mean perfectly portioned containers for the entire week. Even prepping ONE recipe, washing and chopping your produce, or cooking a protein ahead of time can make your week significantly easier.

Small amounts of preparation can lead to BIG improvements in consistency. 🙌
