~ Radiant Rosehips: Another (or A) Taste of the Wild

These beautiful red fruits shining brightly in the late summer sun call to be noticed and gathered for making jam, dried for winter teas or enjoyed as a trailside nibble. (Carefully, with tiny bites, nibble the yummy outside flesh, avoiding the hairy seeds within). On many an autumn day we would head out with our children to gather both the sweet/tart hips along with local cranberries for making a delicious jam ~ a taste of the wild. For the sweetest possible taste, wait until after a frost to gather these jewels!

High in vitamins C and E, rosehips gleaned from the Rosa rugosa shrubs are also enjoyed through the colder months by local wildlife, including squirrels, deer, field mice and local birds.

Though Rosa rugosa shrubs prefers to grow in sandy oceanside terrain, these roses are also happy in gardens and fields where they can thrive even in zone 3b. Their beauty, fragrance, fruit and presence claims our hearts and nourishes our spirits! Hope you can find a corner of your yard to welcome rugosa or visit this wild one during your next oceanside vacation.

In late summer and early fall, the forest trees are sharing their bounty! ย  Black Cherry trees that grow in the Northeast woodlands and along wooded roads, begin to drop their glossy black cherries in late summer and the harvest can last for a few weeks!ย  Yes, these wild cherries are tiny, but the flavor of each is sweet and delicious. Worth the time to gather for sure.ย  Watching the chipmunks stuff their cheeks with this treasured fruit always brings a smile!ย  Many forest dwellers- bear, coyote, wild turkey, squirrels, foxes and others enjoy this tasty treat.ย

One year were wandering in a nearby (new to us ) woodland and happened to find a windfall of these cherries. We realized our good fortune to arrive in this perfect moment and filled our pockets and caps, along with a shirt turned inside out to carry this gift home.ย  Each cherry has a sizeable pit, so what to make of these tasty treats?ย  We decided upon a wild cherry cordial with brandy and honey for a taste of summer in the coming cold days. If fortunate enough to come across such a bounty in the future, Iโ€™d like to try preparing a โ€œshrubโ€.ย  For now, I am happy to find these nibbles on trails or stone walls, take a moment to thank the Black Cherry trees and enjoy a taste of sweet summer delight.ย ย

๐Ÿ„ Turkey Tails (Trametes versicolor);

Softly striped in muted browns and greys, these camouflaged woodland treasures are found on decaying logs in hardwood forests around the world, often in damp areas. Traditionally, these fragrant beauties are known for their cardiovascular benefits, supporting cholesterol and blood glucose levels. Also known for its immune supporting attributes, research shows that Trametes has a broad spectrum of beneficial constituents that encourage respiratory function, liver support and overall immune function. ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ‚

๐ŸŒฟ Black Walnut ~

In early autumn, the light green hulls of black walnuts fall from the tall trees~ a perfect time to gather up these round orbs. The walnut meat is excellent for eating; but it is the fresh hulls that are peeled away, turning a dark brown, that are used for making an herbal extract or oil. Black walnut hulls may support and clear the intestinal tract, act as a digestive bitter and tend to certain skin conditions.

We make Black Walnut as a single extract but also use it in our Para-Gone Formula as well as some of our body care items like the Black Walnut Salve & Wort Eraser Stick!

The green hull contains bitter quinones, such as juglone, fatty acids and bioflavonoids. There is a study from researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health that highlights black walnut and other herbs for certain health concerns.

Fun Fact: If you crack open the seed, it looks like a heart! โค๏ธ

Eyebright!

The Eyebright plants we harvest in upstate NY are a native species, one of many Euphrasia species collectively known as Euphrasia officinalis. We have had the delight to also find this tiny, bright faced flowering herb in our travels abroad, including the west coast of Ireland and the Austrian/ Italian mountains. In all cases, this semi-parasitic annual prefers to grow in a more northern terrain on either dry or damp grassy meadows, or roadsides and somewhat sandy areas that host a variety of plant species including grasses, plantain and legumes such as white clover. Eyebright plants will connect their root system to its neighboring plants, gathering moisture and nutrients from them, helping the species to survive. They usually flower from June through September.

Even knowing Eyebrightโ€™s favorite environment, discovering this sweet jewel can take time, patience and attention. It always feels like a bit of magic when we see the bright faces of white with lines of yellow and purple flowers raised to the sun! These colorful lines guide the bees in to pollinate the flowers! More often, we simply enjoy the presence of these lovely wildflowers, offering our thanks for their place in the wild and return to walking with joy in our steps. * If you do find and harvest a bit of eyebright, leave plenty to mature and seed itself for the coming year.

In Celebration of the wildflowers who brighten the land! Fun Fact: The name Euphrasia comes from ancient Greek and means Joy!
