Being able to admit as a licensed professional that you don’t know everything is hard. It’s especially hard when you’ve been seeing the same patients for many years. Once you expand and open your mind to learn new concepts to bring better care to patients it becomes a conversation of well “this is what I know now” it feels like your turning everything you know and how you’ve been practicing upside down. But learning only leads to better outcomes for patients. I am fortunate to work as a hygienist and Myofunctional therapist (OMT of Kentucky- Myofunctional Therapy for Everyone ) along side Dr Rachel Gold Rachel E. Gold, DMD who has and is putting in the work to bring whole patient centered care to her office. Ask colleagues who are learning about airway dentistry how it’s changed their thinking on patient care. It may just surprise you and how you start looking at your patients!

Myofunctional Disorders often are noticed first as symptoms that a child has. The muscles in the mouth, lips and face are strong influences on bone growth and soft tissue use. The symptoms listed above are a small list that parents often list that are concerns when I have an initial consultation call about their child. Knowing that these symptoms should not be ignored but should lead to a path of getting to the root cause of the dysfunction is how a Myofunctional evaluation can help. Are you are having more questions than answers about what your child has going on?

Your patients are looking for answers. On google. At 3am 😴. Getting guidance from the internet 🛜 while you’re their doctor or hygienist, who could answer the question seems silly. Patients have questions about symptoms that may not seem related to dentistry because in dental and hygiene school we are taught mainly about the teeth, gums and jaws. Basically the small box that is the oral cavity. 🦷
This is where I was in my thinking for 20 years as a dental hygienist treating my patients. Simply when you don’t know you cannot answer the questions. This is not criticism but acknowledging the reality that not everything learned in school is or should be the final answer for our patients. Knowing more is the ability to offer guidance and answers to the questions about symptoms patients are searching for. Don’t let your patients search the internet to find me, offer the answer to correct symptoms. This does not mean learning everything Myofunctional therapy or going down the airway rabbit hole that feels “trendy” it means having a discussion about recognizing the symptoms leading to more confident answers to patients from the question they ask. If you’re a provider curious about Myofunctional therapy I am always open to conversations, it’s about creating a community to offer real solutions to patients.

Is this how your google, ChatGPT or other search engines look? Lists of symptoms that are red flags 🚩 that you or your child have a Myofunctional disorder. Symptoms I look for as a Myofunctional Therapist include: mouth breathing, restless sleep in kids, crowded teeth, messy eating or open mouth eating, poor school performance, dark circles under the eyes, tongue thrusting during speech or eating. Knowing is power, the power to find answers.
