What is a Finnish sauna, and why does it matter? It's the question we hear most at Sisu. Come feel the answer for yourself. Book a sauna + cold plunge session here: https://sisulongevitystudio.com/services/contrast-therapy/
The short answer is one word. Löyly.
Löyly is the burst of heat and steam that rolls off the stones when you ladle water on them. To a Finn it isn't an extra. It's the reason the sauna exists. As Very Finnish Problems puts it, a hot room without löyly is "simply a hot room."
Why it matters: the steam is what makes the heat come alive. A ladle of water sends a wave of warmth over you, and you control it, one ladle at a time. That ritual is what Finns have built their sauna culture around for generations. Plenty of saunas here ask you not to pour water at all. Ours is built for it.
So grab the ladle, add a little water to the stones, feel the heat roll over you, then step into the cold plunge.
