YOU LEFT THE SITUATION… BUT DID YOU UNLEARN THE SURVIVAL? 👀💚

Family, welcome back to WORD ON WEDNESDAY on the Room2Breathe Project!

Today's word is DECONDITIONING (dee-kuhn-DISH-uh-ning).

Deconditioning is the process of weakening or unlearning conditioned responses and behaviors.

And BABY… this conversation might explain why some of us keep repeating patterns we KNOW aren't serving us anymore!

Why do we apologize when we haven't done anything wrong?

Why do we feel guilty saying NO?

Why does peace sometimes feel suspicious?

Why do we overexplain every decision?

And why do we keep responding to NEW situations according to rules we learned in OLD environments?

Sometimes we leave a toxic relationship, difficult workplace, or painful chapter of our lives… but the survival habits we developed there follow us.

And sometimes we start calling those habits our PERSONALITY.

"That's just how I am!"

But is it really?

Or is it something life taught us to do?

🔥 IN TODAY'S CONVERSATION:

• What conditioning and deconditioning actually mean
• How childhood experiences can influence adult behaviors
• Why familiar doesn't always mean healthy
• Why peace and stability can feel uncomfortable
• How survival mode can affect relationships
• People-pleasing, guilt, and learning to say no
• The difference between personality and learned behavior
• Why healthy changes sometimes feel wrong at first
• When other people resist our growth
• How to recognize triggers and practice healthier responses
• Why healing requires compassion, accountability, and patience

And yes, Family, we're going there!

Because sometimes chemistry is just familiarity wearing perfume. 👀

And sometimes "that's just how I am" is really a pattern we haven't challenged yet.

This conversation isn't about blaming ourselves for trauma or pretending that healing is easy. Some learned responses helped us survive genuinely difficult circumstances, and changing them may require time, safety, support, and professional care.

But where we have room to grow, we can begin exploring new ways to respond.

💚 TODAY'S BIG QUESTION:

WHAT DID LIFE TEACH YOU TO DO TO SURVIVE THAT YOU'RE NOW READY TO UNLEARN?

YOU LEFT THE SITUATION… SO WHY ARE YOU STILL LIVING BY ITS RULES? 👀🔥

Family, welcome back to TOXIC TUESDAY on the Room2Breathe Project!

We're continuing BREAKING FREE WEEK with a conversation that might make us a little uncomfortable:

YOU'VE BEEN RELEASED. WHY ARE YOU STILL SERVING TIME?

Sometimes the relationship ended, the friendship dissolved, the toxic workplace is behind us, or the difficult season has passed… but the emotional habits we developed while surviving it are still running our lives.

We left the relationship, but we're still afraid to trust.

We left the workplace, but we're still apologizing for taking time off.

We stopped talking to the person who criticized us, but we're still repeating their words to ourselves.

And sometimes we're making new people pay emotional debts they never created.

WHEW! Let's talk about it.

🔥 TODAY WE'RE GETTING INTO:

• Why old survival habits follow us into new relationships
• The invisible rules we learned in toxic environments
• Trust issues vs. unfairly accusing new partners
• When an ex still has emotional administrator access
• Emotional armor, walls, and healthy boundaries
• Why leaving someone doesn't automatically erase the patterns
• Seeking closure from people who refuse accountability
• Healing without pretending we're unbothered
• How our pain can unintentionally affect other people
• Why we keep checking on people we've already moved on from

This isn't about blaming ourselves for trauma, rushing healing, or pretending painful experiences don't matter.

It's about recognizing how the past can continue influencing our present choices—and learning to respond with awareness, compassion, and accountability.

Because there's a difference between protecting our peace and recreating the very rules we were trying to escape.

🎙️ TODAY'S BIG QUESTION:
Are you protecting yourself from what's happening NOW, or are you still protecting yourself from something that happened THEN?

Have you ever escaped a situation physically but found yourself still mentally living in it?

Family, welcome to MUSIC MONDAY on the Room2Breathe Project!

We're kicking off BREAKING FREE WEEK with my original song, “Trapped My Mind” by Room2Breathe, and a raw, relatable conversation about overthinking, fear, self-doubt, painful memories, and the thoughts that keep us feeling stuck.

Sometimes the relationship has ended, the difficult season has passed, or the circumstances have changed, but our minds keep taking us back.

We're replaying old conversations, anticipating disappointment, questioning our worth, and preparing for things that haven't even happened.

But what happens when the thoughts that once helped us protect ourselves begin limiting the lives we're trying to build?

TODAY WE'RE TALKING ABOUT:
• When our thoughts become a mental prison
• Overthinking vs. healthy reflection
• How past experiences influence present decisions
• Fear, self-doubt, and negative self-talk
• When survival habits follow us into new seasons
• Why we don't have to believe every thought we think
• Reclaiming our peace without pretending the past didn't happen
• Making room for healing, support, and new possibilities

FEATURED MUSIC:
“Trapped My Mind” — Room2Breathe

"The mind is a maze, but I hold the map."

This isn't another conversation about simply thinking positive or pretending everything is okay.

We're exploring how to recognize old thought patterns, question limiting beliefs, and begin responding to the present without automatically expecting the past to repeat itself.

Because sometimes the prison isn't where we are. It's where our minds keep taking us.

QUESTION FOR THE ROOM:
Are you responding to what's happening in your life TODAY, or to something you're afraid might happen because of YESTERDAY?

Why does choosing yourself sometimes feel like betraying somebody else?

Family, we LOVE talking about boundaries until somebody else's boundary inconveniences us!

In today's Toxic Tuesday episode of Room2Breathe Project, we're getting REAL about the guilt trips, emotional manipulation, entitlement, and expectations that show up when we finally start saying NO.

But we're turning the mirror around, too!

Because sometimes we're the ones setting healthy boundaries, and sometimes we're the ones struggling to respect somebody else's.

We're talking about:
- When generosity becomes somebody else's expectation
- Why hearing NO can feel like rejection
- Guilt trips and emotional manipulation
- Being reasonable vs. selfish vs. self-abandoning
- Why people struggle when we change
- Respecting boundaries even when they're inconvenient
- Recognizing our own unhealthy relationship patterns
- Choosing ourselves without making everybody else the enemy

THE TAKEAWAY:
Being reasonable means I matter too.
Being selfish means only I matter.
And self-abandonment means everybody matters except me.

WHEW! Let's talk about THAT!

QUESTION FOR THE FAMILY:
What's harder for you: saying NO without guilt or hearing NO without taking it personally?

How many times have we said YES to somebody else while quietly saying NO to ourselves?

Family, this Music Monday we're kicking off SAYIN' YES TO ME WEEK with a conversation about people-pleasing, boundaries, self-worth, reclaiming our voices, and what it really means to choose ourselves.

Featuring TWO original Room2Breathe songs:
“Sayin' Yes To Me”
“Sayin' Yes To Me (DV Survivor Mix)”

These songs share one declaration, but tell two different stories.

The original explores what happens when we lose ourselves trying to please everybody else, sacrificing our dreams, time, and peace to maintain relationships.

The DV Survivor Mix takes us deeper into domestic violence, survival, emotional abuse, and reclaiming autonomy after experiencing harm.

We're talking about the difference between keeping the peace and actually having peace, why setting boundaries can feel selfish, and why surviving abuse should never be confused with choosing to accept it.

This isn't about becoming selfish. It's about finally including ourselves in the decisions that shape our lives.

IN THIS EPISODE:
• How people-pleasing becomes self-abandonment
• Why saying NO can trigger guilt
• Boundaries without unnecessary apologies
• The difference between compromise and control
• Domestic violence, coercive control, and survival
• Releasing shame about how we survived
• Reclaiming our time, identity, safety, and voice
• Moving from surviving to living

QUESTION FOR THE ROOM:
When was the last time you said YES to somebody else while knowing you were saying NO to yourself?

What happens when the person everybody calls needs somebody too?

All week, Built Solid Week has challenged the way we think about strength.
Monday, we stopped giving the storm credit for our rebuilding.
Tuesday, we stopped confusing our capacity with our responsibility.
Wednesday, we explored METTLE and what difficult seasons can reveal about what we’re made of.
And today, we’re asking: Who’s holding the strong ones?

For TGIT, Shawnta’ Hill takes us into Isaiah 41:10 and four powerful reminders:
“I am with you.”
“I will strengthen you.”
“I will help you.”
“I will uphold you.”

Maybe we’ve misunderstood strength.
Maybe being strong doesn’t mean carrying everything ourselves. Maybe asking for help doesn’t cancel our resilience. Maybe fear doesn’t erase our faith. Maybe rest doesn’t have to be earned through exhaustion.
And maybe being Built Solid isn’t about how much we can hold.
Maybe it’s about knowing Who’s holding us.

In this episode, we’re talking honestly about faith and fear existing in the same room, receiving help when we’re used to being the helper, learning to rest before we collapse, allowing other people to support us, and trusting God when we don’t have all the answers.

Because sometimes the prayer isn’t long or polished.
Sometimes it’s simply: “God, help us.”
And maybe that’s enough.

ROOM QUESTION: Where in your life are you realizing that you need to stop trying to hold everything together by yourself?

What are you really made of?

Today’s Word on Wednesday is METTLE (pronounced MET-uhl): the courage, spirit, strength of character, and steadiness we discover when life gets difficult.

But this isn’t another conversation about how much pain you can survive.

During Built Solid Week, we’ve already challenged the idea that storms deserve credit for the people we become and that being “the strong one” means carrying everything.

Today, Shawnta’ Hill takes the conversation deeper:
Maybe the storm didn’t give you your mettle. Maybe it gave you an opportunity to discover it.

Because hard seasons don’t always reveal a perfectly strong, confident version of us. Sometimes they reveal courage. Sometimes they reveal faith and resilience. And sometimes they reveal people-pleasing, over-functioning, control, avoidance, or patterns we still need to work on.

That revelation doesn’t mean you failed.
Sometimes the revelation is the lesson.

In this episode, we’re talking about courage without fearlessness, what pressure reveals about our patterns, choosing accountability, remaining soft after hard experiences, recognizing growth without expecting perfection, and why knowing what you’re made of should eventually change what you’re willing to entertain.

Maybe being Built Solid doesn’t mean nothing can break you.

Maybe it means:
If something does, I trust myself not to disappear while I’m putting the pieces back together.

ROOM QUESTION: What is something a difficult season helped you discover about yourself?

Don’t tell us only what happened to you. Tell us what you discovered about YOU.

And when somebody shares theirs, tell them:
THAT’S WHAT YOU’RE MADE OF.

Being “the strong one” sounds like a compliment…until everybody starts treating your strength like permission to give you more to carry.

For Toxic Tuesday during Built Solid Week, Shawnta’ Hill is getting raw about what happens when being capable, dependable and resilient slowly becomes a job description you never applied for.

You become the person everybody calls.
The one who figures it out.
The one who holds it together.
The one everybody assumes will be okay because you always seem to handle everything.
But when did “She can handle it” become “She’ll handle it”?

And there’s another uncomfortable side of this conversation: sometimes we help create the expectation ourselves.

Every “I’m good” when we’re not.
Every “I got it” when we really need help.
Every time we make something difficult look effortless.
Every time we pick up a responsibility simply because we know we’re capable of carrying it.

Today we’re talking about the pressure of being “the strong one,” over-functioning, asking for help, receiving support, setting boundaries and learning that being able to carry something doesn’t automatically make it yours.

Because maybe strength isn’t: “Look how much I can carry.”

Maybe strength is finally being able to say: “I know what I can carry. I know what belongs to me. And I finally know the difference.”

And one more thing…
Built Solid does NOT mean load-bearing wall.

What if the storms you survived don’t deserve credit for the person you became?

Welcome to Built Solid Week inside the Room2Breathe Podcast.

For this special Music Monday episode, Shawnta’ Hill brings her new single “Built Solid” into the Room before its official release on October 2 and shares the deeper story behind the lyrics.

This isn’t simply a song about being strong.

It’s about the years spent second-guessing yourself, looking through somebody else’s lens, apologizing for who you are, making yourself smaller to keep other people comfortable—and what happens when you finally decide to take up space.

Shawnta’ also challenges one of her own lyrics: “Every scar made me stronger.”

Because maybe the scar didn’t create the strength.
Maybe the strength came from what happened next.
The therapy.
The boundaries.
The faith.
The healing.
The releasing.
The rebuilding.
The decision to stop abandoning yourself.
Maybe the storms didn’t build you.
Maybe the real story is: Look what I built after the storm.

In this episode, we talk about:
• Why functioning doesn’t always mean you’re okay
• The difference between being strong and pretending nothing hurts
• Second-guessing yourself and chasing validation
• Learning to see yourself through your own eyes
• Taking up space without apologizing
• Why healing doesn’t mean becoming emotionally bulletproof
• Outgrowing the need to prove how much you can carry
• Becoming the person God created you to be
• The story and message behind Built Solid

What if the new thing you’ve been praying for is already happening—but you haven’t recognized it because it doesn’t look like the old thing?

In Isaiah 43:18–19, God says, “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”

That question—do you not perceive it?—is where we’re making Room2Breathe today.

Sometimes we ask God for healing, restoration, opportunity, peace, direction, or a new beginning while carrying a very specific picture of what the answer is supposed to look like.

We want new... as long as it feels familiar.

But what happens when peace feels unfamiliar? When the path appears in the wilderness instead of removing the wilderness? When the water comes from a new stream instead of the old well? When restoration doesn’t mean getting back exactly what you lost?

In this TGIT episode, Shawnta’ Hill explores Isaiah 43:18–19 and what it means to recognize the new thing God may already be doing—even when it doesn’t look like what you expected.

We’re talking about remembering without dwelling, the difference between unfamiliar and wrong, recognizing quiet evidence of growth, finding a way through wilderness seasons, noticing unexpected provision, and making room for restoration that looks different from replacement.

This week’s journey:

Monday — Stop chasing.
Tuesday — Check your participation.
Wednesday — Rewrite the story.
Thursday — Recognize the new.

You don’t have to understand the whole plan to recognize that something is changing.

Look again.

The new thing may already be springing up.
