What recovery looked like...

One morning, he was sitting up, drinking on his own. For one young man with Ebola, that simple act was an extraordinary change. He had been too weak to sit up or hold a cup. The care teams had been helping him drink, visit after visit.

Then Dr. Jon Fielder walked into his room and found him sitting up. The patient went on to recover and was discharged a few days later.

Hear Jon’s firsthand account of caring for Ebola patients in the Congo, including the persistence of the people at their bedsides.

When people think about healthcare in Africa, they may think of tropical diseases. Those illnesses are certainly present in the Nuba Mountains, but Dr. Tom says there is another reality that might surprise people.

“We see and treat a large number of different cancers.”

Recently, a woman traveled to MMRTH from Western Kordofan with extensive cervical cancer and severe bleeding.

For several weeks, the medical team worked to stabilize her. She received multiple blood transfusions and chemotherapy.

Finally, the bleeding stopped.

Dr. Tom and the surgical team were able to perform surgery and remove approximately 95% of the tumor.

Now, they are hopeful that additional chemotherapy will put her cancer into remission.

Her story is one example of the wide range of complex medical conditions Dr. Tom and the team at MMRTH treat every day and a reminder that the healthcare needs of the Nuba Mountains extend far beyond what many of us might expect.

Meet the Team Thursday

Meet Dr. Perry Jansen, AMH’s Vice President of Strategic Health Partnerships and one of the leaders behind our Mission Hospital Teaching Network.

Dr. Jansen spent 16 years serving as a physician in Malawi and founded Partners in Hope Hospital in 2004 in response to the HIV/AIDS crisis. What began as a small HIV-focused initiative grew into an important part of Malawi’s healthcare system, with leadership ultimately transitioned to a Malawian team.

Today, that experience shapes his work with AMH and the Mission Hospital Teaching Network, which helps mission hospitals grow as centers of clinical care, training, and mentorship. MHTN focuses on three interconnected pillars: Organizational Excellence, Clinical Excellence, and a Culture of Learning and Teaching.

For Dr. Jansen, strengthening a hospital means preparing it to care for today’s patients while also forming the healthcare professionals who will serve their communities for years to come.

His daughter was gravely ill with Ebola. He was worried about her doctor, too. After hearing devastating news about his daughter, a Congolese father told Dr. Jon Fielder why he had been asking about him. He had heard that a staff member had contracted Ebola.

“When we didn’t see you, I was worried it was you.” Jon writes: “I stood, overwhelmed, unable to respond.”

On October 24 at Noon ET, hear Jon’s firsthand account of caring for Ebola patients and the families he came to know in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

What is it actually like to care for someone with Ebola?

I’m Dr. Jon Fielder. This summer, I spent nearly a month in an Ebola treatment ward in the Congo. On October 24th, I’ll share stories from that experience: the patients, their families and the remarkable people I worked alongside. Join African Mission Healthcare for Face to Face with Ebola.

AMH was thrilled to participate this week in the groundbreaking of the expanded AIC Kijabe Naivasha Medical Center in Kenya. Dr. Jon Fielder, AMH CEO, has been involved with the clinic from the beginning.

AMH and Kijabe are now starting construction of a new 60-bed inpatient facility with three operating rooms to meet the needs of this growing region. In addition to patient care, the new center will host dozens of trainees at a time, including nurses, physician assistants, and residents.

When Dr. Tom Catena first arrived in the Nuba Mountains, his focus was on providing medical care to people who had little access to it.

But over the years, Mother of Mercy Referral Teaching Hospital has grown into something he never imagined.

When asked what the hospital can do today that he never thought would be possible when he first arrived, Dr. Tom shared:

“I never envisioned that we’d be training Clinical Officers and Midwives.”

Today, MMRTH is not only caring for patients but also training Sudanese healthcare workers who are helping meet the medical needs of their own communities.

For Dr. Tom, the hospital's growth is about more than the care it can provide today. It's about building a future where more people in the Nuba Mountains have access to skilled, locally trained healthcare professionals.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is also an opportunity to look at the health systems patients depend on after a cancer diagnosis.

For more than 15 years, AMH has partnered with Mbingo Baptist Hospital in Cameroon, home to one of the region’s few comprehensive cancer centers. Its multidisciplinary approach brings together oncology, surgery, pathology, radiology, pharmacy, palliative care, nutrition, and other essential services under one system of care.

Today, AMH and Samaritan’s Purse are helping strengthen that capacity even further. Alongside infrastructure development, AMH-sponsored oncology fellowships in India and Uganda are preparing specialists to help staff Mbingo’s new radiotherapy bunker and expand access to cancer treatment for patients across the region.
