Somebody told you your family's food was the problem.

It usually comes with an apology attached. Rice at every meal. The way your mom cooks greens. Sunday dinner. Half the list is gone before you've even started.

None of it has to go to lose weight.

What usually changes is how much of it lands on the plate, what sits next to it, and how often it shows up. Same rice, smaller scoop, more protein and vegetables beside it. Same Sunday dinner, without skipping lunch all day to earn it.

A plan that deletes your family's food is a plan you'll quit by March. Keep it in from the start.

Share this to your story if your list looked like that.

Here's what a first visit with me looks like.

We start by talking about what brought you in and what you'd like your eating to look like down the road. I'm not here to hand you a diet.

Toward the end of the session, I'll help you set one goal to work on. I recommend starting with one, but if you want to add a few more, that's fine too.

We can meet virtually if you're in Georgia, Maryland or Florida, where I'm licensed, and in person if you're in Georgia.

And if you're wondering about cost, I'm credentialed with Aetna, Ambetter, Anthem BCBS, Cigna, Curative, and United Healthcare, so it's worth checking your plan. https://www.rfr.bz/fcda8efa8

It's been a while since I introduced myself.

I've spent this year building AKS Nutrition into the kind of practice I'd send my own family to, so it felt like time to properly reintroduce myself.

→ I'm a registered dietitian in private practice. I see clients in Georgia in person and over video, and I'm licensed in Maryland and Florida too.

→ I can't stand kale, I love cake, and I'm not going to ask you to leave behind the foods you like.

So happy you're here!

If you want to know more about me or what it's like to work with me, comment READY and I'll send you some info.

Soup and a sandwich for lunch can be most of your day's sodium.

So maybe your blood pressure came back a little high, and you've cut way back on the salt shaker.

Most of the sodium in a typical day comes from packaged food and restaurant meals.

Sodium makes your body hold onto extra water, and that extra fluid puts more pressure on your blood vessels.

A can of soup is usually more than one serving, and a pack of ramen is two. Eat the whole thing and you're getting at least double the sodium on the label.

Which one on the slides surprised you? Tell me below.

Most meal plans skip the part where you learn why.

You've probably tried one. Someone hands you a list of what to eat, and you follow it until it runs out.

But it never shows you why you're eating these foods in these amounts. So when the plan ends, you're back to not knowing what to eat.

I do use meal plans with clients, just not on day one.

I'll use one as a guide so you can see on paper what a day looks like, and then you switch things out to your liking. As we keep working together, we talk about what went well and where you want to improve.

If you did a meal plan, how long did you do it for? Let me know in the comments.

10 things I stand by as a dietitian... ⛰️

Here's my list:
You can lose weight and still eat bread.
Nutrition coach is not a credential.
Most people don't need a meal plan. They need help with the meals they already make.

If a rule you're following makes you dread every meal, it was never going to survive a busy week. The stuff that works is boring, and it lets you keep eating food you like.

Do you agree? Disagree?

You're going to wait until Monday over one lunch.

So maybe lunch didn't go the way you wanted, and now you figure you'll pick it back up on Monday.

But it's Wednesday.

So that's the rest of today, and then the weekend, and nothing changes until then. That's five days. Over one lunch?

And I get why Monday sounds better. It's cleaner, and most of us have done it.

But there's another meal coming in a few hours, and it counts the same as a Monday one.

You don't need a clean week to start. You just need the next meal.

Share this to your story if you've pushed it to Monday before.

A catered lunch is decided before you walk in.

The invite says lunch will be served. That's all you know until the lids come off and you're in line with a plate, picking from whatever's left.

If the menu is in the invite, read it.

Catering orders sometimes get shared ahead, or the person who placed it has it. Two minutes the night before and you already know what's coming.

And don't walk in starving.

Have something small an hour before you leave. You still want lunch, you're just not taking the first thing you see because you're hungry.

Save this for the next meeting that comes with catering.

Did you swap sugar for honey because it's natural?

So now the honey goes in your yogurt and the sugar stays in the cabinet. But is it really better for you?

And honestly, I get why this is confusing, because there are two different things going on.

Honey is natural and Splenda is artificial. Fruit has naturally occurring sugar and soda has added sugar. Once honey goes into your yogurt, it's a natural, added source of sugar.

A tablespoon of honey has 17 grams of sugar. A tablespoon of table sugar has 12.

And FYI, white sugar is natural too. It comes from the sugarcane plant, and because they're both sugar, your body handles them the same way.

Send this to the person who keeps telling you honey doesn't count.

Deciding what to order while you're starving never goes well.

So you sit down starving and everybody's already ordered. You pick whatever sounds good in that second.

That's the wrong time to be making the decision.

Pull the menu up before you go. Most restaurants have it online. Pick two things you'd be happy with, so if the first one's gone you still have one.

And read the cooking word. Fried or creamy usually means more butter or oil. Grilled or roasted usually means less.

Eat something small a couple of hours before, so you walk in hungry and not starving.

You picked it before you were hungry. It's already the plan.

Tag whoever always picks the restaurant.
