One of our pediatric infectious disease experts answers questions about our "antimicrobial stewardship program."
She says: "Antibiotic overuse and misuse have led to a lot of problems, especially the emergence and spread of drug-resistant pathogens. Antimicrobial stewardship programs encourage health care providers to use antibiotics judiciously — when you need them, but not use them when you don’t need them, for treatment of viruses, for example."

From the moment she learned she was pregnant, Brittany dreamed of what her daughter would become. What she didn’t know was that Maryiah was already a fighter.

Diagnosed before birth with a form of congenital heart disease called hypoplastic left heart syndrome as well as a genetic disorder called Turner syndrome, Maryiah would need highly specialized care from the moment she was born.

To give her daughter the best possible chance at survival, Brittany turned to the experts at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. With comprehensive teams in neonatal intensive care, cardiology, cardiac surgery, transplant and more, Monroe Carell’s pediatric specialists did more than care for Maryiah. According to Brittany, they also became like family.

After several surgeries including a heart transplant, 5-year-old Maryiah is active and happy, which was her mother’s hope all along.

Our story is best told through theirs. Learn more about other inspiring patients like Maryiah’s. http://spr.ly/61863PfOn

What to Know About AEDs (Facts that Could Save a Life)

AEDs have been in the news a lot this week, and it’s a good time to brush up on the life-saving device. Automated external defibrillators are easier to use than you might think, and they save lives: http://spr.ly/61843RuXI

Based in our hospital, Project ADAM Middle Tennessee helps place AEDs in every school in the area and educate staff members on their use with the goal of preventing death due to sudden cardiac arrest in children and teens.

Automated external defibrillators are easier to use than you might think. Read more on My Southern Health about how AEDs save lives.

Today, we celebrate Stratton and his story.

Before Stratton was born, his mom Lauren’s fetal ultrasound showed that he had kidney dysplasia and ectopic ureter, conditions that prevent one or both kidneys from correctly forming. Because his condition affected only one kidney, Stratton lived without complication until age 15, when he began experiencing stomach pain.

That’s when his parents reached out to urologists at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt for answers. Our team determined Stratton’s kidney was not functional and could be removed. And because ours is one of the few hospitals in the country using pediatric robotic surgery, Stratton’s nationally ranked urology team at Monroe Carell robotically removed the affected kidney through tiny incisions. As a result, Stratton had less pain and minimal recovery time. “Dr. Douglass Clayton and the entire medical team was very caring,” Lauren said. “They were all really on top of things, answered our questions well and did a great job. Dr. Clayton was so good at easing our minds.”

We’re so happy to say that today Stratton is pain free and enjoying life, hanging out with friends and playing lacrosse for Brentwood High School. Click through to see photos over the years! And follow this link to learn more about our Urology team, ranked No. 1 for pediatric urology in the Southeast: http://spr.ly/61863u5m6

VUMC

During the past year, Vanderbilt Health placed highly in several national rankings and was honored with numerous awards.

VUMC was named to U.S. News & World Report’s 2022-2023 Honor Roll of America’s Best Hospitals in the publication’s annual rankings of healthcare facilities. VUMC was the only health system in the Southeast to be named to this year’s Honor Roll.
In addition to inclusion in the Honor Roll, VUMC was named the No. 1 hospital in Tennessee and No. 1 in the Metro Nashville area.

Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt was named the No. 1 pediatric hospital in Tennessee and, for the second year in a row, was named the top children’s hospital in the Southeast, according to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Children’s Hospital rankings.
Monroe Carell achieved a maximum 10 out of 10 pediatric specialty programs nationally ranked, with three specialties earning spots in the top 20.

Both Vanderbilt University Hospital (VUH) and Vanderbilt Tullahoma-Harton Hospital (VTHH) hospital were recognized as being among the safest hospitals in the nation after receiving a spring 2022 safety grade of “A” from the Leapfrog Group.
Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Score uses numerous measures of publicly available hospital data to produce a single score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from infections, injuries, and medical errors.

Multiple Vanderbilt Health hospitals were recognized among the safest hospitals in the United States after receiving a fall 2022 safety grade of “A” from the Leapfrog Group.
VUH, Vanderbilt Bedford Hospital and Vanderbilt Tullahoma-Harton Hospital received A grades, and Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital received a B grade.

VUH was again named a Top Teaching Hospital by The Leapfrog Group.
The Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive awards American hospitals can receive. The quality of patient care across many areas of hospital performance is considered, including infection rates, surgery, maternity care, the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication and other errors, and numerous other qualities.

Monroe Carell was named a Leapfrog Top Hospital for 2022, earning the designation among a select group of children’s hospitals nationwide.
Monroe Carell is one of only 12 children’s hospitals in the nation and the only one in Tennessee to receive a spot on the Top Hospital list this year.

VTHH was named among the top maternity hospitals in the nation by personal finance website Money, which teamed with the Leapfrog Group to develop the first Best Maternity Hospital ranking.
VUMC was again named a Leader in LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality by the Human Rights Campaign Healthcare Equality Index. VUMC is the only organization in Tennessee to repeatedly be recognized for its commitment to adopting LGBTQ-inclusive patient, visitation, and employment policies.
VUMC was recognized with the 2022 Best Workplace for Men in Nursing Award from the American Association for Men In Nursing.
VUMC was named as a BEST for Babies hospital by the Tennessee Department of Health.
The award recognizes labor and delivery, nursery, and postpartum service efforts to reduce infant mortality utilizing Breastfeeding, Early elective delivery reduction, and Safe sleep for Tennessee babies (BEST).

Having her water break in the 32nd week of her pregnancy wasn’t part of Ashley’s birth plan. But when it became apparent that her son, Paxton, would be born prematurely, the NICU team at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt sprang into action.

The Monroe Carell NICU team was right there in the delivery room with Ashley and her husband Kevin. Our expert providers made sure the new parents had plenty of bonding time with their son while giving Paxtonthe care he needed.

Paxton spent two weeks in the NICU, a period Kevin and Ashley refer to as “parenting bootcamp.” They learned so much from the doctors and nurses who made them know they were part of the care team.

Paxton is now a happy, healthy baby achieving all his developmental milestones with a big smile, just as you might expect from the son of two dentists.

Their story is ours. Learn more about other inspiring patients like Paxton.

Meet Sushi—a dog who changed the life of one family forever.
After meeting Squid, a facility dog at Monroe Carell Children's Hospital, the Wall family adopted Sushi (pictured), and their lives changed for the better.
"Jameson is so proud of his dog," exclaimed Wall. "His impulse control issues have improved. I know things will continue to get better."
At Monroe Carell Children's Hospital, we've been using facility dogs to help our patients and families feel safe and loved since 2018.
We're proud to be working with Mars Petcare US program, which aims to bring the healing power of pets to more children and families at Monroe Carell Children's Hospital through programs like this one.
Facility dogs are trained to engage patients to help them achieve a specific treatment goal and have been shown to decrease anxiety. People are drawn to the human-animal bond, so these furry friends are perfect for breaking down walls and helping people express themselves in ways they may not be able to otherwise.

Andrew and Eila decided to give to the Jingle Toy Drive to assure that each child at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt receives a special gift this holiday season. Andrew said, "The reason I donated money to the kids in the hospital is because I don't think it is fair that they are in the hospital and not having fun with their friends. I wanted them to be able to have toys and fun games to play with." Eila also said, "It isn't right that some kids have to be in the hospital and others don't. I thought they might want toys and stuffies to cuddle with." You can join Andrew and Eila in making a difference for patients and families. Give today by visiting http://spr.ly/61863JQc8.

As part of our dynamic duo series, we are happy to share this story from a husband-wife duo, Dr. Michael Dewan and Dr. Annie Dewan.

Michael is a pediatric neurosurgeon and the surgical director of the Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Program and the Pediatric Neuro-Vascular Program. He also has a joint appointment with the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health. Annie is a dermatologist, the director of Inpatient Dermatology and program director of the Dermatology residency program. She specializes in complex medical dermatology and supportive oncodermatology (caring for skin problems caused by cancer treatment). The couple write:

“We met as first-year medical students at Yale School of Medicine. We started dating our second year of medical school, and got married right before we graduated.

We don’t work together directly, but have occasionally shared patients when Michael’s pediatric neurosurgery team has consulted Annie’s inpatient dermatology team. It’s really special to be able to each contribute our unique medical knowledge to help improve the lives of others.

We moved to Nashville because we couples-matched (when a teaching hospital accepts both spouses to residencies after medical school) to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for our respective residencies in 2012. The training at Vanderbilt was incredible, and has allowed us both to pursue our passions and carve out subspecialty niches within our fields. Our best friends are people we have met in the hospital. We consider ourselves fortunate to have fantastic colleagues and work at a medical center that prioritizes excellence in patient care.”

A special memory for this couple: “All three of our boys were born at VUMC, making it a very special place for us. Jack is now 5, Henry is 3, and William is 7 months.

Being a two-physician family with three children is challenging and requires sacrifice. We are learning how to balance our work lives with our family lives in order to make it all come together. Along the way, we hope we are teaching our boys the importance of dedicating your life to service for others.”

What makes us a dynamic duo: “Taking care of sick patients during the most vulnerable moments of their lives is a privilege that we do not take lightly. We also both love to teach, and training the future leaders in our fields is incredibly rewarding.”
