Jennifer Clayton, R.N., a same-day-surgery nurse at CRMC, thought her body was going through natural changes.

After having an appointment with Dr. Bert Geer, gynecologist/ urogynecologist at Cookeville Regional, he discovered Jennifer would need to have a hysterectomy after finding a large fibroid on her uterus, making her uterus ten times the normal weight.

Jennifer and Dr. Geer decided that a robotic procedure would be the best choice for the minimal amount of pain and the fastest recovery.

“I believe in robotic procedures as I just recently completed my 2,000 robotic surgery. The robot offers so many advantages; it has enabled us to do so many more complex surgeries that we were never able to do laparoscopic. I can be so much more precise,” said Dr. Geer.

Many cases of cancer of the colon or re**um are preventable. Screening by colonoscopy can prevent this cancer because precancerous polyps found during the procedure can be removed at the same time. Colonoscopy can also detect the cancer at early stages, when treatment is more likely to be successful. The five-year relative survival rate for cancer localized to the colon or re**um is 90.9 percent.

We look forward to getting together with friends and family to celebrate the holidays. It’s also a time when prevention can play an especially important role. December is a deadly month for impaired driving. Before taking that first drink, have a plan that includes a designated driver, a ride share, or an overnight stay at a friend's home. Just a single drink can cause a decline in visual function, mental judgment, and motor skills, resulting in driver impairment.
