As we approach Native American Heritage Month, I want to share a few insights on how to show up as a friend, ally, or advocate.

Yes, buy our art,
our jewelry,
our food.
etc.

But know those are transactions and not relationships.

If you want to show up as a true advocate or ally, get to know us.

Ask us questions.
Learn our history.
And then share what you learn.

You may be surprised how alike we are. And how different.

Isn't that what makes being human so beautiful?

As a mental health and trauma-informed therapist and coach, this is the most asked question in my office.

And it breaks my heart every time because I know it means this person has been through so much trauma, so much pain, so much betrayal.

But when they ask me this, I always say right away...YES.

Yes, you will trust yourself again. In fact, you will become your own most trusted person with beautiful, healthy boundaries.

If you are a woman who has asked this question before, whether to yourself or a confidant, I can help you navigate the road to trusting yourself again...or maybe even for the first time.

It's interesting how, as we move through different seasons of life, our feelings about the four seasons change.

For instance, Fall used to mean fun with the children... going to Fall Festivals, carving pumpkins, and cozy chili dinners with the family...

But now, as an empty nester, Fall feels a bit empty.

I am learning a new way to celebrate Fall so that I don't get trapped in the sadness of nostalgia.

What are some ways you celebrate the seasons differently now than you did before your season changed?

I’ve been missing some of the simple things we used to do this time of
year. Pumpkin carving, fall festivals, making chili, picking out
costumes, and getting creative with them.

So I found this Halloween tablecloth we could color and talked my
daughter into doing it with me. We sat there and colored, didn’t say
much, and just enjoyed being together.

I think I’ve been missing that creative part of myself too. It felt
good to bring a little of her back. ❤️

By now, most of us have heard of the Cornell 7 and the emerging allegations and details of the investigation.

But it has also brought up the question that is most often asked when victims wait a long period of time before coming forward with their story.

Why is that?

More so, I wonder what it is about our society that makes a victim too scared to come out and seek justice sooner.

I understand innocent until proven guilty...that isn't what this is about.

Instead, I want to answer why MAYBE it took her a while to gather her courage and feel strong enough to stand up for herself.

What are your thoughts?
