Noah, a disabled 11-year-old boy from Dedham, has started a ‘global phenomenon’ after starting a Covid-19 lockdown art project. Beginning back in April to help pass the time by, the 11-year-old, who has Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, and Hydrocephalus, began painting colorful backgrounds with his father Nathan.

After sharing the art on social media, Nathan requested that other artists help Noah and send in specially created pieces for the project. The family was overwhelmed by the response as more than 250 artists sent in their creations. The idea had been to auction off the artwork to raise money for the Colchester and Ipswich Hospital Charity.

A Letchworth dad successfully completed a 100 mile cycle challenge on a single day in memory of his son Tome, who passed away at the age of seven.

The trip took him past many of the children’s hospitals that had helped Tom with his Down Syndrome, as well as many places they shared.

It’s really simple, but first we must pause and...

Behavior is communication.

A young boy had to go to the bathroom mid OT session. Happens a lot.

Parent: Did you wash your hands?

Kid: Oops.

Parent: Here, use hand sanitizer.

Kid: No.

Parent: Just use it.

Kid: I hate that stuff.

Parent: Use it or you can't play!
(OT was just used as a threat?)

Kid: I don't want to!

Parent: Then no iPad!
(I thought OT was the threat? You just leveled up right to electronics!)

Insert full body flopping on the floor. Total frustration.

I needed to know why he was so resistant.

Me: It sounds like you really don't want to use the hand sanitizer! What's up?

Kid: I have a cut on my hand and it burns when I use it!

He had a cut on his hand! That's a VERY valid reason to not want to put hand sanitizer on your hand.

Me: Ouch! Let me see that cut! Yep...definitely could be a T Rex bite. Can we wash your hands hands with soap and water and then get back to playing? If the soap burns, we'll keep the water running so you can wash it off real quick.

Kid: OK

Me: We'll go look for the T Rex too. I don't need anyone else getting bit.

Did I need to punish or threaten? No.
Did I get his hands washed? Yes.

The only thing I did is:
1) ask him
2) listen to him
3) respect him

The behavior told me I needed to dig deeper.

A meltdown was averted. We never did find the T Rex. We did find a band-aid though to cover the smallest T Rex bite ever. Band-aids cure everything!

Great news! We know that families are very uneasy how things will pan out. We are all in this together!

With all of the uncertainty around how school will happen, two things are for sure — kids need to learn and parents need to work. Our new Out of School Time program at our YMCA allows children to attend remote school classes supervised by Y staff, so parents can have peace of mind while at work. We will also be offering our YMCA Preschool program and our new Growing Leaders Early Learning Center Childcare/Preschool program. Please follow the link below for details:

For the first time in 10 years, the annual “Under the Big Sky Buddy Walk” in Great Falls will take place virtually. Participants will walk on their own all month long throughout September.

The goal of the Buddy Walk is to raise awareness and promote acceptance of people with Down Syndrome.

Since those participating will be doing so apart from others, they are encouraged to share photos of their weekly 1/4 mile walk to Facebook.

Upon learning that three teen boys had assaulted a young man with autism, community members took to social media and responded to the incident with shock and anger.

The victim, 24 year old Franklin Henry, however, could only feel concern for his attackers. Sure his face and tooth were still hurting several days later, but he insisted he wasn’t mad and hoped no one would be mean to the teens who clearly “didn’t know better”.

Asked by his father if he afraid of o go on his walks or still be part of the community, Franklin chuckled, “I’m not afraid. Why would I be afraid?”

A teenager with cerebral palsy has gone from being hardly able to walk, to running more than 8km, with support from his physiotherapist.

Finlay, a 14-year-old from Hoveringham took lockdown as an opportunity to improve his strength and physical ability.

Before, he could walk about 20m with a walking frame, which took about five minutes. All his dedication has paid off and now he can run more than 8km using the race runner he received in April.

“Seeing your child go from not really walking at all to running over 8km is fantastic. The step change we have seen in Finlay is not just physical, but also his mental well-being and energy.”

While we all have some downtime, we could start to learn a new language and become better communicators 😊

There’s an App For your phone called ASL, it has pictures, videos, etc to teach you sign language. Who is committed to working on learning sign language?

We are so blessed to have such an incredible group of DSPs supporting their clients!

Remember, this virus is temporary. Stay healthy!

03/16/2020

Great suggestion by a DSP -

To further support the clients we serve, and those who may be medically fragile, it is a good practice to have a clean change of clothing to change into prior to your shifts in case there was contact with any illness or virus that could be transferred by clothing (as some virus' survive on fabric), and of course wash your hands.

Stay safe everyone!

DSPs and Families, this is great news for those who need the extra support ❤️

I can say with certainty that we will never be perfect, However we can ensure is that we will do our very best as a team to support you as a family, a client, a DSP, and support team, always learning as we go.
