335 BC
The city of Thebes had fallen.
Alexander the Great’s army had broken through, his men pillaging, ra**ng, looting, taking captives.
One of his Thracian commanders entered the house of a noblewoman, Timoclea, and r***d her.
Then -he demanded she give him her treasures.
She told him her best possessions were hidden where no soldier would find them.
In the garden.
In a well.
He followed her to the garden, to the well. He peered in. She said the treasures were there, below. He peered deeper.
She pushed him in.
She threw stones at him. On him. Stone after stone. After stone. In the well. Upon his head. Until he was dead. Burying him.
The End.
For every Jane Doe.
For survivors of sexual assault of all genders:
May you know your fierceness.
May you know your teeth.
May you know the strength of your own hands.
May you throw what you need to throw into the well
stone by stone.
May you walk away free.
