You can treat SIBO over and over, but if you never investigate WHY it developed, you may find yourself right back where you started.
Here are 5 things I wish more women understood about SIBO:
1. Motility matters. Antimicrobials may reduce bacterial overgrowth, but impaired motility can contribute to recurrence.
2. Diet isn’t a cure. Low FODMAP and other restrictive diets may reduce symptoms, but they don’t necessarily eliminate the overgrowth.
3. Root causes matter. Treating bacteria is only one part of the picture. WHY did the overgrowth develop in the first place?
4. Digestion matters. Stomach acid, bile flow, digestive function + intestinal motility can all influence the environment in your small intestine.
5. Your nervous system matters. Stress can influence gut motility, digestive function + symptom sensitivity. It’s a piece of the puzzle that deserves attention.
And remember, there’s rarely just ONE contributing factor.
This is why I don’t believe in jumping from one SIBO protocol to another without looking at the bigger picture.
Because the goal isn’t just to get rid of the overgrowth. It’s to understand what may be allowing it to keep coming back.
