A reliable employee kept saying, “I’m fine.”
Deadlines were met. Meetings were calm. There were no complaints.
Then came the resignation.
No dramatic warning. No obvious conflict. Just a capable person who had quietly disengaged before anyone noticed.
Silence is not always satisfaction. Sometimes it is fatigue, disappointment, or the belief that speaking up will not change anything.
Three subtle signs to notice:
1) They stop bringing ideas or asking questions.
2) Their answers become shorter and more transactional.
3) They no longer volunteer, connect with the team, or raise concerns.
In your next one-on-one, try replacing “Everything okay?” with:
“What has felt heavier than it should lately?”
“What is getting in the way of doing your best work?”
“What’s one thing you wish I understood about your experience here?”
Ask. Listen. Resist the urge to explain away the answer.
What’s the best morale-check question you’ve found for uncovering what “I’m fine” really means?
