Handicapped Development Center

Handicapped Development Center At HDC, we support people with disabilities at home, at work and the community. People with disabilities have the same fundamental rights and needs as everyone else.
(65)

They want to be loved, to feel worthy, and to be part of their community. HDC helps people achieve those goals. By being consumers, employees, taxpayers, and neighbors, HDC participants achieve a sense of belonging. From the work they do, they experience pride and satisfaction for doing a job well and being rewarded by a paycheck. By living in the community, they learn what it's like to pay bills and how to be a responsible citizen and a good neighbor.

The HDC Hall of Fame was established to recognize extraordinary contributions by organizations, volunteers, and individuals who have enhanced the lives of people with disabilities. Each year, the new Hall of Fame inductees are presented their awards at the Donor Appreciation Dinner held in December. This year, the Donor Dinner did not take place, but the HDC Board of Directors decided to enter All 2020 HDC Staff into the Hall of Fame to recognize the dedication and commitment to the individuals served at HDC throughout this most challenging year. Thank you to all HDC staff and congratulations on this much-deserved honor.

Normally, during December, we would be having staff luncheons and activities to celebrate the season. With that set aside this year, we are doing "15 Days of HDC Gift Giving" instead. Four staff names are pulled each day and the lucky winners receive increasingly exciting gifts. Today, Marie Applegate, Food Services Supervisor, won an Amazon Echo Dot. She was super excited. Congratulations Marie and all the other winners so far. There's still 8 more days of gift giving!

Today would have been our annual Donor Appreciation event when we celebrate our generous and caring supporters. We won't be doing that in the same way this year, but we would like to show our gratitude again for the generosity of Howard and Carol Harkins who were posthumously honored at last year's event. The Harkins left a wonderful legacy gift to HDC and this beautiful plaque now hangs in our lobby to honor them. Their gift will benefit people at HDC for years to come.

Our friends from Camp Courageous delivered t-shirts, gifts, crafts and cookies to decorate with a "curbside" drop off. Folks at the HDC Residential Center came to the window to pet Diamond the therapy dog, and they made signs saying "thank you". CRS folks did a holiday version of "Pack the Van" to show their appreciation, and had lots of presents under the tree to fulfill Camp Courageous needs.

Congratulations to the latest Finest Moments Medal recipient, Teresa Bracker (holding her medal) from the Community Residential Services department. Teresa is a shining example of a staff member who has truly stepped up during the pandemic. She has worked many hours, at different locations, doing whatever is necessary to ensure all participants receive the care and support they need. Thanks, Teresa, for living the HDC mission. #HDCStrong

In the midst of all the ups and downs this year, at HDC we've been reminded nearly every day of the many things for which we can be thankful--whether it's witnessing a participant's enthusiasm, a staff member's dedication, a family member's gratitude, or a donor's generosity.

You may have said it yourself during this unusual year, “I’m just grateful for the roof over my head.” We are grateful for basic things like food and shelter; things that keep us healthy and safe. Right now, we have one of those basic needs at HDC. The Residential Center needs a new roof.

After the storms this year, the roof was inspected. It didn’t sustain any significant storm damage, but it needs to be replaced because of its age and general wear. We need your help to keep a good roof over the heads of residents. We would truly appreciate your gift to help us reach the goal of replacing the roof yet this year.

Thank you for your consideration of this request. Everyone here at HDC sends good wishes to you and your family, hoping you have the blessing of a good roof over your head during this holiday season.

Hoping your Thanksgiving brings a smile to your face. Enjoy the day set aside to give thanks. A special thanks goes to all HDC staff who will be working this holiday to ensure the needs of the participants are met. Happy Thanksgiving to participants, staff, families, and the entire HDC family.

When our day services temporarily closed down on November 12, we hoped that we would see a decline in Scott County’s Covid-19 positivity rate which would justify reopening services on Monday, November 30, 2020. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened, so it is in the best interest of the participants, staff, and other stakeholders to continue the closure of day services past November 30.

This is challenging for everyone involved, and yet health and safety must always remain the highest priority. A return date will be based on the virus’s impact on the community and any guidance received from the state.

We are doing everything we can to provide day activities in the participants' homes and we continue to offer virtual opportunities every weekday as well. Our case managers are also checking in with participants and their families on a regular basis to provide whatever support we can to assist in keeping them integrated, happy and healthy.

We will continue to keep everyone posted as new information is available.

HDC employee Angela Kennedy and her husband Kurt were unable to have their wedding reception due to the pandemic. Since they had already paid the deposit to the caterer, they decided to use that money to provide a Thanksgiving meal for all 3 group homes. Thank you Kennedy's for your generosity and congratulations on your marriage!!!

CRS Resident Counselor, Sarah Johnson(pictured right) has worked at HDC for 27 years and has continually gone above and beyond for the participants. It is no surprise that she would be awarded with the Finest Moments Medal. She regularly plans activities and outings to enhance the lives of the individuals she works with and has adapted to the changing opportunities due to the pandemic. Assistant Program Director Dianna Griebel said, "Despite the pandemic, she always has a smile on her face and a contagious laugh."

The Lynnwood court facility has had 3 employees test positive for covid 19 , you are not being told this! that! But it is true it is even been taken home to their families! so if the employees have it don't you think that residents well also!!!beware if you have family members there or if you know anybody that works there They are telling nobody not even the other employees that worked around people that tested positive the health department means to check into this place
I want the public to know that there is been at least a 3 employees test positive for covid 19 at the Lynnwood court facility.... It has actually been taken home to their families also. So if you have family that is in these centers this needs to be made known to you by the facility and they are not doing it... They are not even informing their employees of who has contracted covid 19 in the facility.... this place should be shut down!
Is there anyone that would be willing to draw the alien for our residents at the RC? We would LOVE to be able to put this in the front for all of them to see!
Thinking this would be something nice to share with everyone on the page! All of our residents, here at the RC, wanted to say hi to everyone and to let everyone know they are happy, healthy, and having tons of fun with staff!
