Doctors, Families Sell Transparent Masks to Help Hearing-Impaired

While on the internet we found two sites which show how to make face masks with a clear window so people can see your mouth in case they read lips. We know the full face masks "muffle" your voice and those who are hard of hearing may benefit from you using one of these. One is a You Tube video and other is a site in which the audiologist makes masks and down further on their site is instructions on how to make your own. You may want to check these out!

I'm hoping these copied over correctly.

As people continue to wear masks amid the coronavirus pandemic, one group is finding this new practice particularly challenging.

Scheduling of Appointments
In order to keep our patients and employees safe during this time, we are reducing the amount of appointments in our office. We are available to service urgent repair needs of your hearing devices and taking appointments for those needing hearing aids. Our service center sites in the Aledo and Geneseo areas have not reopened as of this time. We will notify patients when this occurs. We have been in the business of helping people hear for over 62 years, and we continue to honor that commitment. When business is back to the new normal, we will contact each patient for any needed services.

We would like to remind you also that if you have any chemicals in your house, please be careful if you have children that they do not come in contact with them in any way. Chemicals should be used wisely. Please stay safe and remember we are all in this together.

03/23/2020

During this time of social distancing, Davenport Audiology & HAC will remain open, but offer curbside service and limited appointments. Please call prior to coming into the office. We thank you for your understanding.

We got together on Dec. 19 for a Christmas dinner at Diana's house. Those in attendance, Diana, Husband Bill, Kay, Grandson Nathaniel, Dr. Hartman and wife Chryss. Unfortunately Brenda was still coughing (has been for almost three weeks now), so decided it best she not attend. We missed her and her smile greatly. We had a wonderful dinner and most likely all ate too much. We played three games, Ornaments on the tree, Know your Christmas Cookies and an Antler Toss game. Fun and conversation was had by all! We enjoyed desserts made by Brenda and Kay before we ended our party. We wish all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Valentine's Day is coming.
Gifts for your valentine with a hearing loss

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, you are probably thinking of gift ideas for the ones you love. Candy and flowers are great, definitely buy those, but you can also purchase or make something special that shows you are really considering your spouse, family member or friend with a hearing loss and his or her needs. Some ideas are shown below which may be helpful.

A captioned telephone. This is a great at-home product for older adults who have trouble hearing on the phone and it is easy to use.

A neck loop. For someone who wears hearing aids with a telecoil, a neck loop is a great gift because it can amplify sounds using FM in any environment.

A personal amplifier system. These are useful for one-on-one conversations.

A visual alert system. These are good for things like visitors ringing the doorbell, or those that use strobe lights and vi*****rs to keep people with hearing loss safe by alerting them in case of a fire.

A device that can amplify the TV. Your family member or friend with a hearing loss won’t have to keep turning the TV up, forcing everyone else out of the room. Instead, he or she can listen with personal amplification while everyone else listens at a comfortable volume for them.

Hearing aid clips for seniors

Many senior living residents wear (or need) hearing aids and it can be difficult for the staff to keep track of everyone’s devices. These devices are often lost in the facility and can cause a lot of conflict between the residents/families and the caregivers. This is a cost-effective solution for preventing the loss of your hearing aids by connecting a cord from your hearing aids to the wearer’s clothing. Designed for both monaural or binaural hearing aids. Compatable with RIC, ITE and BTE aids.
Hearing aid clips for glasses

For those people that wear hearing aids and glasses, it can be a struggle to keep track of everything. The way to do this best is to attach the eyeglasses and the hearing aids together. Not only does it keep them more secure, but it reduces the chance of them being lost.

One of the best gifts you can give anyone is the gift of better hearing. If you have a loved one or friend who is not hearing well, encourage them to find a hearing healthcare professional and make an appointment to have their hearing evaluated.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE EAR

Fact #1
Ears pick up sound waves. However, your brain is what interprets the sound.
Fact #2
Sounds waves are passed from air to liquid in the inner ear. The inner ear has tiny hair cells, which react to sound waves. This triggers chemicals that are sent to the brain as nerve impulses.
Fact #3
Skin glands in the ear canal, produce ear wax. Ear wax lubricates and cleanses the ear of dirt and dust.
Fact #4
Ears never stop working, even when you are asleep. Your ears can still hear sounds, but your brain shuts them off.
Fact #5
Ears are self-cleaners. Minute hairs in the ear canal, pushes ear wax forward out of the ear.
Fact #6
The ear drum is smaller than 0.7 inches in width. It also moves less than a billionth of an inch, while hearing.
Fact #7
Your sense of hearing, depends on tiny hairs in your inner ear. If you lose these hairs, you lose your hearing.
Fact #8
The number one cause of hearing loss, is exposure to excessively loud sounds (85 decibels or higher).
Fact #9
Earwax lubricates our ears, the same way as tears lubricate our eyes. Without adequate amounts of earwax, our ears would feel dry and itchy.
Fact #10
You should never stick anything in your ear. This includes Q-tips and your fingers. They can push wax further into the ear, where it can become blocked.
Fact #11
The ear works as an amplifier. Most of the time, normal human ears can produce constant tones of sound. Many times, tinnitus are caused by this feedback.
Fact #12
Human earlobes may be free (hanging free from the head) or attached (joined to the head). Free earlobes are twice as common in humans as attached lobes.
Fact #13
Hearing occurs when sound travels through the ear to the eardrum. The eardrum, then, vibrates three small bones that cause vibrations in fluid in the cochlea. The cochlea is where 20,000 nerve cells send messages to the brain.
Fact #14
The ear flap protects the internal parts of the ear. It also helps to transport sound to the inner ear.
Fact #15
The semi-circular canals in your inner ear, send messages to your brain. This helps you keep your balance when you move.
Fact #16
Your ears contain a liquid, which helps your brain know if you are moving. If you spin around very fast, the liquid takes a while to settle down. This is why you can sometimes feel a little dizzy.
Fact #17
Teenage hearing loss is on the rise. This is possibly caused by an increase of gaming, mobile phones, and computer use.
Fact #18
You’re born with about 3500 of hair cells. They can be damaged by really loud noises. Make sure to wear ear plugs, if you are going to be around loud noises.
Fact #19
At the age of 65, one in three adults has some hearing loss. Surprisingly, a majority of the people who suffer from hearing loss, are under age 65.
