Today was marathon day in New York City— the TCS New York City Marathon runs the first Sunday of every November. Growing up I lived just two blocks away from the marathon course and we would go cheer everyone on. Roughly half the field each year is women. Research on female runners consistently finds that about 1 in 3 deal with urine leaks during training or racing (especially on hills, sprints, or fatigued late miles), and it’s an active area of current study — Mayo Clinic and others are running 2026 clinical trials on cadence retraining for stress urinary incontinence in runners. It’s common, under-discussed, and rarely framed as something treatable rather than “just part of running”. If you’re tired of it, do something differently… schedule with a pelvic floor PT.

Showing up without preparing, i.e connecting to your body and learning to push, is like showing up to a marathon without training. Marathoners train for months prior and so should you. This is the most important marathon you will run. It’s time to prepare with that mindset.

World Menopause Day is October 18, and the timing is good: a new randomized trial in Menopause (Sept 2026) found that women in menopause who did guided pelvic floor training had less dryness, urgency and leaking, and better s*xual quality of life than women who only got education.

Notice the word GUIDED. Those women had a program built around their bodies, not a list of Kegels pulled off the internet.

That matters because there’s no one-size pelvic floor plan. Some pelvic floors need strength. Many need to learn to relax first, because a muscle that’s always holding can’t do its job well, and adding Kegels on top can make things like pain, urgency or discomfort with s*x WORSE.

What’s right for you also depends on where you’re starting: your symptoms, how active you are, and the season of life you’re in.

Here’s something anyone can try today, Kegels or not. The next time you sit down, notice whether you’re holding your belly or squeezing low in your pelvis without meaning to. Take three slow breaths, letting your belly and pelvic floor soften as you breathe in. Just noticing that habit tells you something useful about where you’re starting.

If you’re not sure what your body needs, that’s exactly what a pelvic floor PT evaluation is for.

Send this to your mom, your sister, or the friend in her late 30s or older who’s been told leaks and dryness are “just part of it.” She deserves a plan that fits her. 💙

Latinas wait the longest to get help for pelvic floor symptoms. That’s not because we suffer more. It’s because we carry more.

We put family first. We keep leaking, pressure, and pain a secret, sometimes even from our own mothers and sisters.

Research shows Latinas face the highest barriers to getting care, and that shame often gets passed down from one generation to the next.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s honor our mamás and abuelas by doing what many of them never got to do: ask for help.

Leaking is common. Pressure is common. Pain with intimacy is common. None of it is something you just have to live with, whether you’re pregnant, postpartum, or in menopause.

🔁 Share this with the woman in your family who needs to hear it.

Have you had a pelvic health checkup this year?

We make time for our annual physicals, dental cleanings, and eye exams — but what about our pelvic health?

A pelvic health checkup can be an opportunity to talk about symptoms, understand what’s normal for your body, and address concerns before they start affecting your everyday life.

Here are a few steps to get started:
Talk about your symptoms & goals — even the things that may seem small.
Learn what’s normal for your body — understanding your pelvic health can help you recognize changes.

Pelvic floor physical therapy is individualized care that helps address your specific needs and goals while improving your overall health. Things like constipation and chronic back pain can be addressed with pelvic PT.

Your pelvic health deserves attention, too.

Ready to take the first step?
