📣 Colorado is considering significant changes to Medicaid Long-Term Services & Supports (LTSS), and families have an important role in helping shape HOW those changes are made.
HCPF has been clear that changes are coming. Family input is especially important in helping decision-makers understand which changes create the greatest risks, what protections are needed, and whether proposed cuts would actually save money.
If your child or family member relies on LTSS, think about:
• What care is essential to keeping them safely at home?
• What would happen if certain hours or services were reduced?
• Could a reduction increase the risk of hospitalization, caregiver breakdown, or institutionalization?
• Would the cut actually save Medicaid money — or simply shift costs to emergency care, hospitals, nursing facilities, residential care, or other services?
• What exceptions or safeguards are needed for people with higher or more complex needs?
• Is there another way to achieve savings without creating greater risks or costs elsewhere?
💬 Specific examples matter. Instead of only saying, “My child needs this service,” help explain what happens if that support is no longer available, who would provide the care instead, and what the downstream consequences would be.
This is an important opportunity to help Colorado make difficult decisions in a way that protects people with the greatest needs and avoids cuts that may create bigger problems — and bigger costs — somewhere else.
