How to Use a Gait Belt Properly
1. Placement:
• Place the belt around the person’s natural waistline, over their clothing (never directly on skin).
• Ensure the buckle is positioned in the front or slightly to the side so it doesn't poke the person when they sit.
2. Tightening:
• Thread the belt through the teeth of the buckle first, then through the other side.
• The Two-Finger Rule: The belt should be snug enough that it doesn't slide, but you should be able to fit two fingers flat between the belt and the person's body.
3. The Grip:
• Always use an underhand grip (palms facing up) when holding the belt. This provides a more secure hold and prevents your hands from slipping off if the person stumbles.
• Never use the belt to "lift" the person off the ground; use it to guide and steady them.
4. Body Mechanics:
• Keep your feet shoulder-width apart for a stable base.
• Stay close to the person. If they start to fall, do not try to catch their full weight; instead, use the belt to slowly guide them down your leg to the floor.
