Caring for an aging family member can feel like managing a second full-time job.

There may be:

• Multiple providers
• Changing medications
• Prescription refills
• Specialist appointments
• Lab work and follow-up instructions
• Questions that were forgotten during a visit
• Family members who need updates

Care coordination helps bring those pieces together.

A nurse can help organize information, prepare questions, review instructions, communicate with providers, and make sure important follow-up needs are not overlooked.

Families should not have to navigate a complicated healthcare system without guidance.

A medical appointment can go well, and a family can still leave wondering, “What do we do now?”

That gap is a big part of why I created Peiskos Wellness.

I wanted to offer practical nursing support with time to listen, answer questions, and understand what daily life actually looks like at home. Preventive foot care is at the heart of my work, alongside support with medications, care coordination, and staying independent.

In this video, I’m sharing a little of the story behind Peiskos—and what I hope every client and family feels when we work together.

Families often wait until a fall, hospitalization, or sudden change to talk about support at home.

Planning earlier gives an older adult more time, more choices, and a stronger voice in the decisions being made.

A thoughtful independence assessment can look at:

• Mobility and balance
• Home safety
• Medication management
• Foot and skin health
• Memory and mood
• Daily routines
• Caregiver concerns
• Available family and community support

The purpose is not to decide whether someone “can” or “cannot” live independently.

It is to understand what is working today—and what could make tomorrow safer.

Sometimes an aging parent does not need more help all at once.

The first signs may be small:

• Walking more slowly
• Avoiding stairs
• Wearing the same clothing repeatedly
• Missing medication doses
• Letting appointments or bills pile up
• Eating less than usual
• Giving up activities they once enjoyed

One change may not mean there is a serious problem. A pattern of changes, however, may be a sign that it is time to ask a few gentle questions.

The goal is not to take away independence. It is to understand what has changed and find the right support early.

Most fall prevention begins with small changes at home.

A loose rug, dim hallway, slippery pair of socks, or frequently used item stored out of reach may not seem dangerous—until balance is challenged.

Take a quick walk through the home and look for:

• Loose rugs or curled rug edges
• Clutter in walking paths
• Poor lighting, especially near stairs
• Missing or loose handrails
• Cords crossing the floor
• Slippery socks or unsupportive footwear
• Items that require reaching or climbing

Fall prevention is not about limiting independence. It is about making the home easier and safer to move through with confidence.

Small changes today can help protect mobility tomorrow.

You may not feel as thirsty when the weather turns cooler—but your body still needs fluids.

Older adults can be especially vulnerable to dehydration. Even mild dehydration may contribute to:

• Dizziness
• Fatigue
• Headaches
• Confusion
• Constipation
• Weakness or unsteadiness

Try keeping water somewhere visible and easy to reach. A favorite cup, a small pitcher at the table, warm caffeine-free beverages, soups, and water-rich foods can also help support fluid intake.

If a healthcare provider has recommended fluid restrictions because of a medical condition, follow that individualized guidance.

Staying hydrated is one small habit that can support energy, clear thinking, and safer movement throughout the day.

Foot care is not just about keeping nails trimmed.

Routine preventive foot care provides an opportunity to look for changes that may otherwise go unnoticed, including:

• Thick or difficult-to-trim nails
• Corns and calluses
• Dry or cracked skin
• Swelling
• Redness or pressure areas
• Changes in sensation
• Footwear concerns

For an older adult, even a small foot problem can make walking uncomfortable. When walking becomes painful, activity may decrease—and that can affect strength, balance, and independence.

Regular nurse-led foot care can help support comfort, mobility, and early recognition of concerns.

Healthy feet are an important part of staying active and independent.

Cooler air and indoor heat can leave aging skin dry, itchy, and more likely to crack.

Feet may need a little extra attention this time of year.

Try these simple steps:

• Check both feet every day
• Dry carefully between the toes
• Moisturize the tops, bottoms, and heels
• Avoid putting moisturizer between the toes
• Wear clean, dry socks
• Report cracks, redness, swelling, or sore areas early

Someone with diabetes, poor circulation, numbness, or difficulty reaching their feet may need additional support.

Small skin changes are easier to address when they are noticed early.
