Reassurance isn’t bad. Comfort from people we trust matters. The trouble comes when reassurance becomes the only way to quiet a doubt, because then the doubt keeps needing more of it.
It doesn’t always look like asking someone, either. It can also be mental: replaying a conversation, reviewing memories to “make sure,” or trying to think your way to certainty.
This pattern shows up in general anxiety, OCD, and relationship anxiety. Therapy approaches like Exposure and Response Prevention help people gradually build tolerance for uncertainty. Done with support, it happens at a pace that feels manageable, not all at once.
