Mother's Day History - Mother’s Day was established in 1914 by US President Woodrow Wilson. It is observed annually on the second Sunday in May. Mother's Day seeks to honor and recognize the sacrifices and accomplishments of mothers. Mothers are recognized by family and friends regardless of whether they are biological or perceived maternal figures. This day offers sons, daughters, and anyone with a mother the chance to show their appreciation. Mothers are typically thanked with cards and flowers, breakfast in bed, or by agreeing to do all the household chores.

Happy Mother's Day! 🌷🌸🌹🌼

We love supporting and helping women, be sure to check out this upcoming workshop by a fellow woman business owner.

Grab a few (3) tennis balls, a tall sock, some space on the floor, and learn techniques to massage away the kinks!

Brought to you by Shannon Curvey, Licensed Massage Therapist, Corrective and Medical Exercise Specialist, and owner of Function-N-Fitness.

We will be using self-myofascial release techniques with one or two tennis balls to unwind and relax your muscles. Myofascial release is the unwinding of muscle tissue to allow better movement and circulation in the body. You will need to be able to get on and off the floor and a few (3) firm balls in order to participate in this workshop.

If you need supplies, go here for Three Tennis Balls and here for a yoga mat .

Cindy Steinberg was seriously injured in an accident 20 years ago, but she still lives with pain every day. "I didn't know there was such a thing as living in pain all the time," she said.

When Steinberg had to stop working because of her pain, she started an informal pain support group at a local library and soon realized she was not alone. She met hundreds of people with all kinds of conditions — from endometriosis to chronic migraine, spinal stenosis to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Regardless of the original cause of pain, Steinberg realized the experience was often the same: devastating.

"Pain can affect every aspect of people's lives when it's chronic like this," Steinberg said. "I don't think it is really understood how severe that can be."

After seeing the impact chronic pain had on her and so many others, Steinberg left her corporate job and started a new career to try to make a difference. Now, she's the national director of policy and advocacy at the U.S. Pain Foundation and a member of HealthyWomen's Chronic Pain Advisory Board.

Body changes on your period -
Our bodies are physically going through a lot. During me********on we are our ‘shedding’ a lining – which from a metaphysical perspective, can be a time for our minds and bodies to ‘shed’ too and release or cleanse. Typically many of us can feel more lethargic, tired, agitated, bloated, sleepy or moody. All of this is totally normal as a result of the hormonal changes – never judge yourself.

It is also so important to tune into your body at this time and give it all the love it needs. Focus on relieving the pressure to do it all and be a little more flexible and kind. Perhaps this means enjoying earlier nights, eating nourishing grounding food, saying no to social arrangements and choosing to exercise with love, not intensity. I love a gentle yoga class, anyone else feel me?!

If, as Mao Zedong said, “Women hold up half the sky,” the Covid era has only enlarged that fraction.

Added to the lion’s share of cooking, domestic work and childcare, the female role might now embrace monitoring children’s education, often while working from home, and dealing with omnipresent partners. The result can be a non-stop sense of being overstressed and overbooked.

Dr. Dina Katz, a senior attending cardiologist at Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow and member of Northwell Health’s Katz Institute for Women’s Health, has several recommendations for how women can manage their well–being during this unprecedented time, and even empower themselves.

“This is a crucial time to take care of our bodies,” says Dr. Katz. “With our routines disrupted, we have an opportunity to make new routines. When I ask patients how much physical activity they take, the most common answer is, ‘Not enough.’ But if we’re no longer commuting, we have extra time that can be translated into exercise.”

Some benefits are more apparent than others, but all are good reasons to nerd out over coffee.

Most people can't go a morning without coffee. The taste and the very quick jolt of caffeine can make all the difference in your day. But there are actually some real health benefits to drinking a cup of coffee — they go way beyond just making you feel wide awake (although we love the energy rush, too). Examining it closely, coffee has pretty incredible health benefits as laid out by a suite of developing research in the scientific community, namely a decreased risk of developing certain chronic diseases.

Coffee isn't for everyone, including those who suffer from acid reflux, sleep disorders or sleep hygiene concerns, anxiety, or more simply a dietary sensitivity to caffeine. And because coffee can be enjoyed in so many ways, it's far from a magic bullet — especially since many people tend to turn to elaborately concocted sugary coffee drinks. These beverages tend to lose their health edge thanks to excessive caloric and added sugar counts, among other dietary drawbacks.

It goes without saying, 2020 has been a year full adapting to changes and accepting new norms. It has had a major impact on the health and wellness space, with more and more people interested in taking care of their bodies and minds. My health predictions for 2021 reflect the special emphasis we’ve put on our overall well-being, and for good reason.

Now more than ever, people across the globe are prioritizing their mental, emotional and physical health. That’s great news and perhaps the silver lining after such a difficult year. So this coming year is sure to involve immune-boosting supplements, at-home workouts, more time outdoors and more.

Here’s what I predict will be the health and wellness trends for 2021:

EVERYONE wants to be fit and healthy, but some believe that they don’t have enough time to exercise.

Not true, according to Gold's Gym personal trainer Jerry Diaz.

“An average person, male or female, can make great progress with at least 2 to 3 hours of exercise per week,” he said.

“Just about anybody can figure out how to squeeze in 2-3 hours of exercise per week.”
