12 years ago, the PHF made history. We became the first and ONLY national organization to initiate National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month! Thank you to Michelle Bachmann and Leonard Lance for their support and belief in us to get this done. Since July 29, 2009, we celebrate NHAM in the United States each September. #phf #realactionrealchange #wedidthat

In our community, everyday is Doctor's Day for our Hydro Heroes. Where would our Hydro Heroes be without our amazing Doctors?

But today is a special day of recognition for them. What Doctor do you want to recognize today?

Day 26 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month; of Cerebrospinal Fluid: The total volume of CSF in the adult ranges from140 to 270 ml. The volume of the ventricles is about 25 ml. CSF is produced at a rate of 0.2 - 0.7 ml per minute or 600-700 ml per day. The circulation of CSF is aided by the pulsations of the choroid plexus and by the motion of the cilia of ependymal cells. An excessive build up CSF in the ventricles of the brain is known as Hydrocephalus. This is 23 year old Katelynn from Massachusetts. #phf #ham2020

Day 25 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month: Ventriculoatrial shunt placement enables cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to flow from the cerebral ventricular system to the atrium of the heart. The preferred distal site is the peritoneal space (ventriculoperitoneal shunt), as this space is generally safely accessible and possesses more than adequate absorptive capacity for the CSF volume produced by a given person. In rare cases, the peritoneal space is inadequate, necessitating an alternative distal site. The most common alternative sites are the cardiac atrium (ventriculoatrial shunt) and the pleural space (ventriculopleural shunt). Common reasons for this include previous intra-abdominal infection and scarring due to prior procedures or intra-abdominal pathology. Once the peritoneum is ruled out, the surgeon must verify that the atrium is an acceptable target. This is 17 year old Grace of New York. #phf #ham2020

Day 24 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month: A programmable shunt is a type of ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) that is used for treatment for hydrocephalus. The goal of a programmable shunt is to reduce the abnormally high pressure inside the brain. This is achieved by placing a catheter in the brain that allows drainage of excess fluid into the abdomen. A programmable shunt has an adjustable valve which allows you to modify the amount of fluid drained after the shunt is implanted. This is 4 year old Clara of Michigan. #phf #ham2020

Day 23 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month: The first "shunt" silicone one way valve was invented in the late 1950's by John Holter. A chance discovery showed Holter, after a failed attempt in which a young boy died, that he could use a silicone one-way valve (pressure sealing). After a medically suitable grade of Silastic (silicone and rubber) was found, the device was patented, and John Holter set up a company, Holter-Hausner International, to manufacture the cerebral shunts. Day 22 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month: Hydrocephalus can be detected as early as 18 weeks in-utero via ultrasound. Ventricles in the brain should measure 10mm or less. Any measurement over 10mm is a sign of Hydrocephalus in a fetus. This is 1 year old Evan Jude of Wisconsin. #phf #ham2020

Day 20 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month: A limited number of individuals can be treated for Hydrocephalus with an alternative procedure called third ventriculostomy? In this procedure, a neuroendoscope โ€” a small camera that uses fiber optic technology to visualize small and difficult to reach surgical areas โ€” allows a doctor to view the ventricular surface. Once the scope is guided into position, a small tool makes a tiny hole in the floor of the third ventricle, which allows the CSF to bypass the obstruction and flow toward the site of resorption around the surface of the brain. Day 19 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month. Surgery is needed for an infected shunt. Antibiotics can stop infection in the CSF. But since the shunt is not a living thing, antibiotics cannot reach all of the bacteria stuck to it. Even if the infection in the CSF clears up, it may come back if the shunt stays infected. Therefore, they need to remove the shunt and give your child antibiotics until all of the infection in the CSF has gone. Then, a new shunt is inserted. Day 15 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month: The balance between production and absorption of CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) is critically important. Because CSF is made continuously, medical conditions that block its normal flow or absorption will result in an over-accumulation of CSF. The resulting pressure of the fluid against brain tissue is what causes hydrocephalus.

Day 14 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month: Shunt systems are imperfect devices. Complications may include mechanical failure, infections, obstructions, and the need to lengthen or replace the catheter. Generally, shunt systems require monitoring and regular medical follow up. When complications occur, subsequent surgery to replace the failed part or the entire shunt system may be needed. Shunts have 50% failure rate in the first 2 years of placement.

Day 13 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month. NPH is an abnormal increase of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain's ventricles that may result from a subarachnoid hemorrhage, head trauma, infection, tumor, or complications of surgery. It is often mistaken for Dementia or even Alzheimers. However, many people develop NPH when none of these factors are present. An estimated 375,000 older Americans have NPH.

Day 7 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month: A significant number of shunt-dependent children and adults are plagued by chronic, often disabling headaches. These are usually not associated with other symptoms of increased intracranial pressure, and neuro-diagnostic studies usually do not reveal evidence of a shunt malfunction. In most cases the CAT or MR scan show small ventricles. The condition of small ventricles on CAT or MR scan coupled with chronic headache complaint has been termed the Slit Ventricle Syndrome.

Day 6 of National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month. In approximately 90% of the people with Spina Bifida, Hydrocephalus also occurs because the displaced cerebellum interferes with the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid, causing an excess of the fluid to accumulate.
